An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology to join an expanding multidisciplinary consultant team in the South East. This is a replacement post offering a balanced portfolio of speciality outpatient practice, inpatient care, and General Internal Medicine (GIM) responsibilities, supported by strong clinical governance, teaching infrastructure, and research opportunities.
The role provides flexibility to develop subspecialty interests across a range of endocrine and diabetes services while contributing to high-quality patient care and service development.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities – Diabetes & Endocrinology
- Deliver consultant-led outpatient clinics, including new patient, follow-up, and subspecialty clinics.
- Provide specialist clinical advice to the multidisciplinary diabetes and endocrinology team, including referral triage and Advice & Guidance services for primary care.
- Contribute to the development of specialist services in areas such as:
- Diabetes in pregnancy
- Pituitary disorders
- Insulin pump / HCL services
- Diabetic foot services
- Adrenal disorders
- Thyroid cancer care
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and collaborative care pathways.
Teaching, Audit & Governance
- Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in diabetes, endocrinology, and general medicine.
- Supervise and mentor junior doctors and trainees.
- Participate actively in clinical audit, quality improvement, appraisal, and revalidation.
- Contribute to departmental governance, patient safety initiatives, and service development.
Supporting Professional Activity
- Maintain Continuing Professional Development (CPD), job planning, appraisal, and revalidation activity.
- Participate in departmental meetings, clinical governance forums, and mandatory training.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- Basic medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
- MRCP (UK) and Speciality Certificate Examination (SCE) in Endocrinology or equivalent.
- Complete registration on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility within 6 months of interview).
- CCT in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine (or equivalent via portfolio pathway).
Desirable
- Higher degree.
- Postgraduate certificate in medical education.
Clinical Experience & Knowledge
Essential
- Comprehensive experience in the management of diabetes, endocrinology, and general medicine.
- Evidence of engagement with equality, diversity, and inclusive practice.
- Participation in audit and service improvement.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- Subspecialty: endocrine or diabetes experience.
- Broad clinical exposure within and outside the speciality.
