An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Microbiologist to join a modern, well-equipped microbiology service in the East of England. The post offers an opportunity to contribute to the delivery and ongoing development of high-quality clinical microbiology, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention services within a progressive, multidisciplinary environment.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide expert microbiology advice to clinicians and primary care teams regarding the diagnosis, management, and prevention of infection.
  • Interpret, validate, and authorise laboratory results and ensure timely clinical communication.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds and clinical case discussions.
  • Contribute to the on-call rota, providing microbiology and infection prevention advice.
  • Develop, review, and authorise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in collaboration with departmental colleagues.
  • Participate in clinical audit programmes and service improvement initiatives.
  • Provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues during annual leave where required.
 

Infection Prevention & Control

  • Support the investigation, management, and prevention of communicable diseases.
  • Work closely with Infection Prevention and Control teams to provide expert guidance on infection control measures and outbreak management.
 

Teaching & Training

  • Supervise and train junior medical staff in microbiology and infection management.
  • Participate in regular departmental clinical meetings focused on learning, guideline updates, and service development.
 

Management & Administration

  • Contribute to departmental management and operational planning.
  • Act responsibly regarding data governance and confidentiality requirements.
 

Audit & Research

  • Participate in and contribute to audit and research activity supported by the organisation.
  • Engage with ongoing clinical research projects where appropriate.
 

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Formal training in Medical Microbiology or equivalent speciality training.

Desirable

  • RCPath or equivalent postgraduate qualification.

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 2 years’ clinical experience in Microbiology or Infection specialities.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing microbiology clinical advice and laboratory interpretation.
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.

Desirable

  • Experience contributing to audit and quality improvement.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary clinical environments.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Strong speciality knowledge in Clinical Microbiology and Infection Management.
  • Understanding of infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and clinical governance.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable

  • Evidence of audit participation or research involvement.
