This is a substantive Consultant Haematologist role within a consultant-delivered service providing comprehensive haematology care up to Level 2a. The service delivers high-quality clinical and laboratory haematology to a mixed urban and rural population, with strong links to regional MDTs, tertiary centres, and cancer networks.

The successful candidate will join a supportive multidisciplinary team and contribute to the continued development of a sustainable, high-quality haematology service. Consultants with broad general haematology training are particularly encouraged to apply, with flexibility to accommodate subspecialty interests that complement existing services.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on consultant-level clinical care for haematology patients across outpatient, inpatient, and day-case settings
  • Share responsibility for all haematology patients within the service
  • Participate in joint haematology MDT meetings and regional network working
  • Undertake both clinical and laboratory haematology duties, including blood film and bone marrow reporting
  • Take a lead role in an agreed specialist area, including education, audit, or service development
  • Actively participate in clinical trials and act as Principal Investigator where appropriate
  • Liaise closely with GPs, hospital specialists, nurse practitioners, and allied professionals
  • Contribute to teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff and MDT colleagues
  • Participate in clinical audit, governance, appraisal, revalidation, and CPD
  • Participate in the consultant on-call rota
  • Contribute to management, service planning, and continuous improvement initiatives

Qualifications

Essential

  • Primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Haematology
    • OR within 6 months of CCT at the time of the interview
    • OR equivalent (CESR)
  • MRCP (or equivalent)
  • FRCPath (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience

Desirable

  • Higher degree (MD / PhD or equivalent)
  • Additional postgraduate qualifications relevant to haematology

Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience as a clinical and laboratory haematologist
  • Experience delivering consultant-level haematology care
  • Experience working within NHS haematology services
  • Experience participating in MDT working and regional networks

Desirable

  • Experience in a subspecialty interest that complements existing services
  • Experience in service development or leadership roles
  • Experience working across acute and community interfaces

Clinical Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Broad, up-to-date knowledge across all aspects of haematology
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in emergency and elective haematology
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care
  • Strong clinical judgement and decision-making skills

Desirable

  • Specialist expertise in haemato-oncology, haemostasis, thrombosis, or laboratory haematology

Audit, Research & IT

Essential

  • Demonstrable evidence of participation in clinical audit
  • Engagement with clinical governance and quality improvement
  • IT literacy relevant to modern NHS clinical systems

Desirable

  • Research experience
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience acting as Principal Investigator

Teaching & Education

Essential

  • Proven commitment to medical education
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate learners
  • Ability to teach clinical and generic professional skills

Desirable

  • Formal qualification in medical education
  • Experience supervising trainees or junior doctors
  • Completed thesis or structured educational training
