This is an opportunity to join a redesigned Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service following significant investment and the introduction of a new model of care. The service aims to support all children and young people to thrive through high-quality, evidence-based mental health provision.

The post holders will join an established multidisciplinary CAMHS team and play a key role in shaping service delivery for children and young people aged up to 18. There are opportunities to develop and lead a specialist clinical interest, including Eating Disorders, Crisis Intervention, Neurodevelopmental Disorders, or Transition Services.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide senior medical leadership within the CAMHS multidisciplinary team.
  • Undertake assessment, diagnosis, and management of children and young people with complex mental health needs.
  • Manage acute mental health presentations, including self-harm, suicidal ideation, mood disorders, psychosis, and crisis presentations.
  • Provide consultation, advice, and liaison to education services, social care, paediatrics, adult mental health services, and third-sector organisations.
  • Provide clinical leadership during crises and support MDT decision-making.
  • Take clinical responsibility for young people admitted to paediatric or adult mental health inpatient settings under the consultant’s care.
  • Supervise and support junior medical staff and other clinicians within CAMHS.
  • Participate in service development, redesign initiatives, audit, quality improvement, and governance activities.
  • Develop and deliver teaching and training programmes for multidisciplinary staff and external agencies.
  • Participate in the daytime medical on-call rota and contribute to Mental Health Law assessments.
  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation and correspondence.
  • Undertake CPD in line with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidance.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
  • CCT in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (or within 6 months of award at interview) or equivalent
  • Eligibility for Section 12 approval
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience

Desirable

  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc or equivalent)
  • Existing Section 12 approval
  • Dual accreditation (e.g. Forensic Psychiatry, Learning Disability Psychiatry)

Experience

Essential

  • Experience assessing and treating children and young people in CAMHS settings
  • Experience managing acute and crisis mental health presentations
  • Speciality experience in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Experience working within NHS mental health services

Desirable

  • Experience working with eating disorders

  • Experience in neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD / ASD)
  • Experience working with older adolescents and transition services
  • Experience working with substance misuse in young people
  • Experience working with young people at risk of offending

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Strong clinical leadership skills within a multidisciplinary environment
  • Ability to prioritise workload and manage complex caseloads
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and management
  • Understanding of Mental Health legislation relevant to children and adolescents
  • Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Competence in the use of IT systems and electronic patient records

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification or experience as a teaching lead
  • Experience contributing to service redesign or system transformation
