An excellent opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Speciality Doctor in Anaesthetics to join a large, progressive Anaesthetics and Critical Care Department within the Yorkshire and Humber region.
The post holder will work within a well-established, supportive multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality anaesthetic and critical care services across elective, emergency, obstetric, and critical care settings. The department has a strong reputation for teaching, training, research, and clinical governance, and values the contribution of SAS doctors in both clinical and leadership roles.
Department Overview
The Anaesthetics and Critical Care Department supports a modern theatre and day-surgery complex, with adjacent ICU and HDU facilities. The department provides anaesthetic services across a wide range of surgical specialities, including general surgery, orthopaedics and trauma, gynaecology, urology, ENT, maxillofacial, breast surgery, and ophthalmology.
Speciality Doctors play a key role within the department. They are actively involved in service delivery, education, governance, and leadership, with opportunities to develop specialist interests aligned with the department's needs.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Deliver safe, effective anaesthetic care across elective and emergency theatre lists.
- Participate in out-of-hours rotas, including theatres, labour ward, and critical care, supported by consultant cover.
- Provide anaesthetic support for obstetric services, including labour ward activity.
- Contribute to essential services of care in ICU and HDU as part of the multidisciplinary team.
- Undertake pre-operative assessment and post-operative care in line with departmental practice.
- Maintain high professional standards in accordance with GMC Good Medical Practice.
Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)
- Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement, governance, appraisal, and revalidation.
- Engage in continuing professional development (CPD) and mandatory training.
- Contribute to departmental administration, service development, and job planning.
- SPA activities will be scheduled by mutual agreement with the Clinical Lead.
Teaching and Training
- Participate in teaching and training of junior doctors, medical students, and multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Contribute to departmental teaching programmes, tutorials, and simulation activities.
- Opportunities exist to become involved in educational supervision, appraisal, and curriculum development.
Research and Audit
- Participate in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives.
- Opportunities to engage in departmental and national research studies.
- Support the implementation of evidence-based practice and service improvement.
Clinical Governance
- Actively participate in morbidity and mortality meetings, audit meetings, and governance reviews.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of patient safety and clinical outcomes.
Essential Qualifications
- Primary Medical Degree (MBBS / MBChB or equivalent).
- Complete GMC registration with Licence to Practise.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Evidence of basic anaesthetic competencies, equivalent to Stage 1 of the RCoA curriculum.
- Up-to-date Advanced Life Support (ALS).
- Minimum of 1 year of NHS experience, with demonstrable expertise in anaesthetics.
Essential Experience and Skills
- At least 4 years post-graduate clinical experience, including a minimum of 2 years in anaesthesia.
- Experience covering out-of-hours work, including theatres and emergency activity.
- Experience in obstetric anaesthesia and/or critical care.
- Sound clinical judgement with the ability to manage risk and prioritise workload.
- Strong practical skills relevant to anaesthetic practice.
- Evidence of non-technical skills, including communication, teamwork, leadership, and situational awareness.
- Experience in audit or quality improvement activities.
- Experience delivering teaching or training.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Primary or Final FRCA or FFICM.
- Qualification in medical education or instructor status (e.g. ATLS, APLS).
- Educational or Clinical Supervisor status.
- Experience in research with publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Knowledge of clinical governance and service development.
