An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Breast Radiologist to join a large, well-established Imaging Department in the North West. The successful candidate will work within a highly subspecialised breast imaging service, delivering both symptomatic and breast screening services, and contributing to a high-quality, patient-centred diagnostic pathway.

The post holder will work alongside an experienced team of Consultant Breast Radiologists, Breast Surgeons, Radiographers, Advanced Practitioners, and Clinical Specialists, supporting a breast service that delivers care aligned with the National Breast Screening Programme.
 

Service Overview

The Breast Imaging Service supports a screening population of over 100,000 women, equating to approximately 34,000 screening examinations per annum, alongside a high-volume symptomatic service.

The wider Imaging Department comprises a large cohort of Consultant Radiologists, with strong subspecialisation across body imaging, neuroradiology, vascular radiology, and interventional radiology. The department has a strong ethos of quality assurance, audit, evidence-based practice, and research, with active participation in national and international clinical trials and innovation initiatives, including AI-supported mammography assessment.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-level breast imaging services across symptomatic and screening pathways.
  • Participate in breast multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, with rotational cover and full sessional commitment.
  • Deliver and support the National Breast Screening Programme, including assessment clinics and interventional lists.
  • Contribute to body imaging CT reporting and participate in the body imaging on-call rota, supported by speciality registrars.
  • Work closely with colleagues in Surgery, Histopathology, Oncology, and Allied Health Professionals through MDTs and joint clinico-radiological meetings.
  • Actively participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement, including ongoing accreditation processes.
  • Support and contribute to research activity, including national and international multicentre studies.
  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate education and training, including teaching of radiology trainees and advanced practitioners.
  • Support service development and adoption of new imaging techniques and technologies.
 

On-Call Commitments

  • Participation in the Consultant Body Imaging on-call rota, currently operating on approximately a 1:18 weekday and 1:10 weekend basis.
  • First-line on-call cover is provided by specialty registrars, with separate rotas for neuroradiology and vascular radiology.
 

Job Planning and Flexible Working

  • Job planning will be agreed with the successful candidate, based on a 40-hour working week.
  • Flexible working arrangements, including part-time working, extended working days, and weekend sessions, may be accommodated by mutual agreement.
  • Opportunities exist to develop additional interests, including ultrasound- and CT-guided intervention (desirable but not essential).
 

Essential Qualifications

  • Complete GMC registration with Licence to Practise.
  • FRCR or equivalent.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT, CESR, or equivalent (or within 6 months of completion at interview).
  • Completion of complete speciality training in Radiology.
  • Minimum of 1 year of NHS experience in Radiology at consultant or senior speciality level.
 

Clinical Experience and Skills

Essential

  • High level of clinical competence in Breast Imaging.
  • Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across breast and body imaging.
  • Strong organisational, reporting, and workload prioritisation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and support service leadership.

Desirable

  • Experience in breast interventional procedures.
  • Teaching experience across medical and non-medical staff groups.
  • Interest in research, innovation, and service development.
 

Research, Audit, and Governance

Essential

  • Experience of, and commitment to, clinical audit and governance.
  • Awareness of current developments and evidence-based practice in breast radiology.
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice.

Desirable

  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Active involvement in research studies or trials.
