Consultant in Clinical Haematology
Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join a forward-thinking Emergency Department in the North West. The successful candidate will play a key role in modernising emergency care pathways, aligned with national Clinical Quality Indicators and a wider emergency flow improvement programme across the local health economy.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the expansion and development of emergency services across multiple sites, delivering high-quality, consultant-led emergency care within both urban and rural settings. The department places strong emphasis on staff development, specialist interests, education, and innovation in Emergency Medicine.|
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-level clinical leadership on the Emergency Department shop floor, ensuring safe, timely, and effective care for all patients.
- Deliver care across the full spectrum of Emergency Medicine, including major trauma, paediatrics, medical and surgical emergencies, and complex undifferentiated presentations.
- Lead and support the implementation of national Clinical Quality Indicators and contribute to ongoing service improvement and redesign initiatives.
- Actively supervise, teach, and mentor junior doctors, ACPs, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary team members.
- Contribute to the development of modern emergency care pathways and emergency flow solutions across the local health system.
- Participate in consultant rotas, including evenings, nights, and weekends, in line with service requirements.
- Maintain admitting responsibility for selected inpatient cohorts, including head injuries and significant thoracic trauma.
- Participate in follow-up clinics for Emergency Department and post-discharge patients where appropriate.
- Engage in clinical governance, including audit, incident review, quality improvement, and guideline development.
- Support and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education programmes, including trainee doctors and Advanced Clinical Practitioners.
The Emergency Medicine Service
The Emergency Department manages a high-volume and diverse case mix, including a significant proportion of paediatric attendances. Services include:
- Designated resuscitation facilities, monitored bays for major cases, and dedicated areas for minors and specialty care.
- A separate paediatric assessment and treatment area, supported by specialist nursing teams.
- 24-hour access to CT imaging with image-sharing links to tertiary centres.
- Close integration with pre-hospital services, including air ambulance and coastguard services.
- Established trauma unit status within a regional trauma network.
Emergency Medicine Consultants play a central role in education and workforce development, supporting trainees across all grades, ACCS trainees, ST4–ST6 Emergency Medicine trainees, CESR candidates, and Advanced Clinical Practitioners.
Qualifications and Training
Essential
- Primary Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent).
- Complete GMC registration with Licence to Practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (or within 6 months of interview), or
- Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).
- Provider status in ALS, ATLS, and either APLS or PALS.
- Minimum of 1 year of NHS experience at consultant or senior specialty level in Emergency Medicine.
Desirable
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM).
- Sub-specialty training or interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
- Instructor status in ALS, ATLS, APLS, ETC.
- Interest in point-of-care ultrasound (e.g. FAST).
Experience and Knowledge
Essential
- Extensive clinical experience and independent practice in Emergency Medicine.
- Ability to lead complex clinical decision-making in high-pressure environments.
Desirable
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching and training.
- Interest in developing closer integration with Acute Medicine or Primary Care services.
Teaching and Education
Essential
- Proven commitment to teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
Desirable
- Experience teaching clinical skills to medical students and non-medical healthcare professionals.
- Educational qualifications or recognised educator roles.
Research, Audit, and Clinical Governance
Essential
- Active participation in clinical audit, governance, and quality improvement.
Desirable
- Experience supervising postgraduate research.
- Publications or presentations in peer-reviewed journals or at national conferences.
