The department delivers comprehensive gastrointestinal services, including gastroenterology, endoscopy, hepatobiliary, colorectal, and emergency services, within a cohesive, multidisciplinary framework.
This role is suitable for an experienced consultant gastroenterologist seeking to work within a forward-thinking service that supports subspecialty development and service innovation.
Service Description
The Gastroenterology service operates as an integrated digestive diseases department, bringing together:
- Gastroenterology and Endoscopy
- Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Services
- Colorectal and Emergency GI Surgery
The service is supported by:
- Dedicated GI inpatient wards
- Modern endoscopy facilities across multiple sites
- Specialist GI physiology laboratories
- A well-established multidisciplinary team including trainees, trust doctors, and specialist nurses in IBD and hepatology
Significant investment in endoscopy infrastructure continues, supporting service expansion and high-quality patient care.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality consultant-led care for patients with gastroenterological conditions across inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Contribute to the general gastroenterology service, including inpatient ward cover and outpatient clinics.
- Participate in the GI bleed on-call rota, including out-of-hours cover.
- Undertake diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy in line with service requirements.
- Act as Consultant of the Week on a rotational basis, providing leadership for GI inpatient services and referral support to acute medical teams.
- Work collaboratively with gastroenterology colleagues, GI surgeons, and the wider multidisciplinary team.
- Participate actively in clinical audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives.
- Support education and supervision of trainees and junior doctors.
Professional Responsibilities
The post holder is expected to:
- Comply with GMC Good Medical Practice, infection control policies, and clinical governance requirements.
- Participate in annual appraisal, revalidation, and continuing professional development.
- Audit clinical outcomes, report incidents, and contribute to risk management.
- Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, primary care colleagues, and external providers to ensure continuity of care.
- Respond to patient complaints in line with organisational policy.
- Support efficient service delivery, including providing adequate notice for annual and study leave.
On-Call Commitments
- Participation in the out-of-hours GI bleed rota.
- Shared consultant responsibility for inpatient gastroenterology cover.
Essential Qualifications
- Primary Medical Degree (MBBS, MBChB or equivalent).
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Gastroenterology, or within 6 months of CCT at the time of appointment.
- Royal College Membership (or equivalent).
- Minimum of 1 year of NHS experience working at an appropriate senior level.
Desirable Qualifications
- CCT or equivalent.
- Management qualification or equivalent leadership experience
