An excellent opportunity has arisen for experienced Speciality Doctors or ST4+ level clinicians to join a busy and progressive Emergency Medicine service in the North West. The successful applicants will form part of the Senior Decision Maker rota, working alongside Higher Specialist Trainees and credentialed Senior Advanced Clinical Practitioners.

This role is ideal for clinicians seeking to further develop both their clinical leadership and non-clinical competencies, including governance, quality improvement, and departmental management, within a supportive and well-structured Emergency Department.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide senior clinical input in the initial assessment, investigation, management, and disposition of patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
  • Independently manage the department overnight as a senior ST4+ clinician, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and timely patient care.
  • Deliver care across the full spectrum of Emergency Medicine, including resuscitation, management of critically ill and injured patients, paediatrics, complex cases, and minor injuries.
  • Support consultants and senior nursing staff in the day-to-day running of the shop floor, ensuring adequate patient flow and appropriate staff allocation.
  • Supervise and support junior doctors, clinical fellows, trainee ACPs, and medical students, fostering a positive learning environment.
  • Contribute to achieving national Emergency Department Quality Indicators and maintaining patient flow.
  • Undertake relevant administrative duties, including review of imaging and pathology results.
  • Participate in observation ward rounds within the Emergency Department.
  • Engage in quality improvement, audit, and clinical governance activities, including supporting projects led by junior colleagues.
  • Actively participate in departmental teaching and training sessions.
  • Maintain professional standards in line with GMC Good Medical Practice and adhere to organisational policies and clinical guidelines.
 

Professional Relationships

  • Accountable to Emergency Medicine Consultants and Associate Specialists.
  • Work collaboratively with Speciality Doctors, Trust Doctors, Speciality Trainees, ACPs, nursing staff, allied health professionals, and administrative teams.
  • Provide supervision and support to postgraduate doctors in training and advanced practitioners.
 

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Primary Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Complete GMC registration with Licence to Practise.
  • Current certification in ALS/ACLS, ATLS/ETC, and APLS/EPLS.
  • MRCEM/FRCEM
  • Minimum of 1 year of NHS experience in Emergency Medicine or a closely related speciality.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate Royal College qualification (e.g., MRCEM or equivalent).
  • Additional qualifications or training in wilderness, expedition, or humanitarian medicine.
 

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • At least 4 years post-registration experience in supervised training or equivalent posts.
  • Minimum of 36 months’ experience in Emergency Medicine.
  • At least 3 months’ experience in Anaesthesia and/or Intensive Care Medicine.
  • Experience managing paediatric patients in general or emergency settings.
  • Ability to recognise limitations and appropriately seek senior advice.
  • Excellent clinical judgement, prioritisation, and time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated completion of Foundation competencies or equivalent.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.

Desirable

  • Evidence of involvement in audit, research, or service improvement projects.
  • Teaching, presentation, or leadership experience.
 

Management and Administrative Skills

Essential

  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively and delegate appropriately.
  • Accurate, clear, and timely clinical documentation.
  • Awareness of NHS structures and service delivery models.
  • Ability to contribute to the efficient and smooth running of the Emergency Department.
  • Competent IT skills with a willingness to learn and adapt to new systems.

Desirable

  • Experience in staff supervision, leadership roles, or budget awareness.
 

Teaching and Education

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience in teaching or supporting colleagues within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to motivate, mentor, and support junior staff.

Desirable

  • Experience teaching undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees.
  • Evidence of leadership development or formal educational qualifications.
 

Research, Audit, and Governance

Desirable

  • Active participation in medical audit and clinical governance.
  • Experience contributing to research or quality improvement initiatives.
 

Communication Skills

Essential

  • Excellent spoken and written English, adaptable to clinical contexts.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Empathetic, patient-centred approach to care.
  • Ability to work sensitively within a multicultural community.
