An excellent opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultant Geriatrician to join a rapidly expanding Older People’s Services and Frailty Pathway within the South West region. Significant investment is driving transformation across frailty, Parkinson’s disease services, community geriatrics, orthogeriatrics, and dementia care. This is an ideal role for clinicians passionate about innovation, service development and high-quality care for older adults.

The multidisciplinary team includes Eldercare consultants, specialist nurses, community MDTs, pharmacists, therapists, and strong partnerships with primary care and regional specialist centres. The service is also closely aligned with research programmes and medical education initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

The successful candidate will:

  • Deliver consultant-led inpatient and outpatient care across general geriatrics, frailty, Parkinson’s disease, falls, dementia, orthogeriatrics or community geriatrics (depending on interest and service need).
  • Participate in acute and elective care for older adults, ensuring the highest clinical standards.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative models of care, including frailty pathways, community-based services and surgical liaison.
  • Participate in the Older People’s Services rota and the General Medical Consultant rota as required.
  • Provide senior clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary team including nursing, AHPs, community teams, and old age psychiatry.
  • Provide cover for colleagues during annual leave and authorised absences.
  • Carry out administrative duties, documentation and follow-up related to patient care.

Teaching, Training & Supervision

You will be expected to:

  • Teach and supervise junior doctors, medical students and other healthcare professionals.
  • Support professional development and act as a mentor where appropriate.
  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programmes.

New consultants will receive 2.5 SPAs for the first year, dedicated mentoring, and structured induction.

Clinical Governance & Quality Improvement

The post holder will:

  • Participate actively in audits, QI projects, incident review processes and governance meetings.
  • Contribute to service evaluation and redesign, embedding best practice in frailty and geriatric care.
  • Promote evidence-based practice across the department.

Research & Academic Opportunities

  • Opportunities exist to engage with ongoing research, especially in Parkinson’s disease and frailty.
  • The service is closely connected to regional universities for teaching and collaborative research.
  • Support is available for academic activities, study leave, and the development of clinical research interests.

The consultant will:

  • Maintain GMC “Good Medical Practice” standards.
  • Participate in annual appraisal, revalidation and maintain CPD.
  • Uphold Equality, Diversity and Inclusion principles.
  • Ensure data protection and confidentiality standards are met.
  • Comply with all mandatory training and governance requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and respect their contributions.
  • Decline duties outside their competence where patient safety may be compromised.

Travel to community hospitals or other regional sites may be required.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • GMC Registration with Licence to Practice
  • GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR at interview)
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in geriatric medicine or general internal medicine
  • Participation in clinical audit and governance
  • Experience in teaching medical students and junior doctors

Desirable

  • Evidence of research involvement
  • Subspecialty interest (frailty, Parkinson’s, dementia, orthogeriatrics, stroke, or community geriatrics)
