An excellent opportunity has arisen for two dynamic, highly motivated Respiratory Consultants to join a growing, collaborative Respiratory Medicine department in the South West region. This expansion supports the continued development of high-quality local respiratory services, integrated care models, and a consultant workforce that values work–life balance and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide consultant-led care for respiratory inpatients, including patients in the acute respiratory unit, isolation wards, and medical outlier wards.
  • Participate in a rolling inpatient rota (currently 2 weeks in 7, moving to 2 in 8–9 with expansion).
  • Conduct ward rounds, senior reviews, discharge planning, and assessment of new admissions.
  • Deliver 7-day specialist respiratory cover as part of a structured weekend rota (8 am–2 pm), followed by dedicated days off the next week.
  • Participate in a 1 in 26 General Medicine evening on-call rota, including post-take reviews and evening handover.
  • Lead outpatient clinics, bronchoscopy lists and subspecialty respiratory services during off-ward weeks.
  • Contribute to lung cancer pathways, integrated respiratory services, pleural disease services, sleep medicine, home ventilation, ILD, asthma/COPD, TB, or any chosen area of further subspecialty development.
  • Work collaboratively with specialist nurses, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, allied health professionals, and community respiratory teams.

Teaching, Training & Leadership

The post holder will:

  • Teach and supervise junior medical staff, speciality trainees, fellows, and medical students.
  • Provide leadership within the multidisciplinary team, supporting continuous learning and quality improvement.
  • Participate in educational activities, study leave and ongoing CPD, with protected SPA time provided.

Governance, Audit & Quality Improvement

You will be expected to:

  • Engage actively in clinical audit, guideline development, mortality reviews, and service evaluation.
  • Contribute to respiratory governance programmes and trust-wide governance initiatives.
  • Maintain high standards of documentation, patient safety and clinical effectiveness.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
  • GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR at interview)
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience

Experience

Essential

  • Broad competency in managing all aspects of Respiratory Medicine
  • Experience in general internal medicine and acute medical care

Desirable

  • Experience in bronchoscopy, EBUS, and pleural procedures
  • Experience in teaching and medical education
  • Management or leadership experience
  • Participation in clinical audit, quality improvement or research
