An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Neurologist to join a well-established and dynamic Neurology team in the West Midlands region. This is a newly created post designed to support a growing service that provides neurological care across the region, through both outpatient clinics and inpatient consultative services.

The successful applicant will join a collaborative directorate within the Rehabilitation and Ambulatory Care division, contributing to high-quality neurology services and helping shape future service development—particularly pathways for long-term neurological conditions, early diagnosis, and reducing unnecessary hospital stays.

Special interests in neurology are welcome and will be fully supported.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

• Provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient Neurology services within the region.
• Offer expert diagnostic and management support for a wide range of acute and chronic neurological conditions.
• Work in partnership with multidisciplinary teams—including General Practitioners, acute physicians, rehabilitation teams, and specialist nurses—to deliver coordinated neurological care.
• Ensure appropriate and efficient requesting of diagnostic investigations to support accurate diagnosis and management.
• Provide cross-coverage for consultant colleagues, including annual and study leave.
• Support the development of proactive neurology pathways, aiming to improve access, reduce hospital admissions, and streamline care for chronic neurological disorders.

Teaching & Supervision

• Provide professional supervision and clinical development of junior doctors assigned to the Neurology service.
• Act as Clinical Supervisor for trainees and optionally undertake training to become an Educational Supervisor.
• Teach undergraduate medical students, with opportunities for involvement as an academy tutor or honorary lecturer.

Education, Training & Communication

• Contribute to the training of clinical staff from various disciplines.
• Maintain strong communication with community teams, general practitioners, and external agencies involved in patient care.
• Participate in clinical meetings, postgraduate teaching sessions, and multidisciplinary case discussions.

Governance, Audit & Professional Development

• Demonstrate a strong commitment to Clinical Governance, Risk Management, and service audit.
• Participate in the development, implementation, and review of systems to maintain safe and effective clinical practice.
• Undertake regular CPD and ensure clinical practice remains up to date.
• Contribute to medical audit and research activities in collaboration with senior colleagues.

Service Development & Management

• Work with divisional management and consultant colleagues to help shape the strategic direction of Neurology services in the region.
• Contribute to developing innovative, efficient, and patient-centred models of care.
• Participate in workforce planning, resource management, and service modernisation initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures relating to clinical practice, staff management, and safety.

General Responsibilities

• Provide inpatient and outpatient neurology care jointly with consultant colleagues.
• Optionally participate in the regional neurology on-call rota, with time in lieu provided.
• Ensure clear communication arrangements for staff and patients needing consultant input.
• Undertake additional duties as required and appropriate for this consultant role.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

• Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
• Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.

Desirable:

• Higher medical degree (MD/PhD).
• MRCP or equivalent postgraduate qualification.

Clinical Experience

Essential:

• Demonstrable experience managing both acute and chronic neurological disorders.
• Ability to deliver independent consultant-level neurological assessments and management plans.

Desirable:

• Experience in neurology education or teaching roles.

Skills & Abilities

Essential:

• Advanced clinical neurology skills appropriate for a consultant appointment.
• Excellent communication, teamworking, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.

Research & Audit

Essential:

• Evidence of participation in clinical audit and service improvement.
• Ability to apply audit findings to effect meaningful clinical change.
• Awareness of research and its application to clinical practice.

Desirable:

• Research experience, ideally relating to neurosonology or transcranial magnetic stimulation.
• Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
