A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology to join a progressive, expanding team in the North West. This is a key appointment within an established and highly motivated multidisciplinary service, supporting the delivery of high-quality Diabetes and Endocrinology care across both inpatient and outpatient settings.

The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic team consisting of:

  • 4.6 WTE Diabetes & Endocrinology Consultants
  • 0.8 WTE Associate Specialist
  • Experienced Diabetes Specialist Nurses & Dieticians
  • Fully integrated pregnancy, podiatry, transition, and young persons' diabetes teams
  • A well-developed specialist endocrine service, including transgender endocrinology, is the region's leading provider.

The service has strong links with regional pituitary, endocrine surgery, ophthalmology (thyroid eye disease), and thyroid/parathyroid MDTs. The organisation also benefits from a fully digital clinical system, with modern DKA and VRIII protocols on an electronic platform.

Subspecialty interests—such as thyroid, pituitary, transgender endocrinology, bone endocrinology, or technology-driven diabetes care—are encouraged and supported.

Primary Duties of the Job

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality care for patients in Diabetes & Endocrinology across inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Participate in the on/off ward model for diabetes and endocrinology inpatients.
  • Support and help develop a fully integrated insulin pump service, including transition, young persons, pregnancy, and podiatry pathways.
  • Deliver specialist Endocrinology clinics, including the opportunity to develop niche areas of interest.
  • Contribute to acute medical services as required by the job plan.
  • Provide clinical supervision and leadership to junior medical staff, Diabetes Specialist Nurses, and MDT colleagues.
  • Contribute to weekly diabetes pregnancy clinics and young persons' services.
  • Participate in monthly endocrine MDTs and radiology meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with the GMC's Good Medical Practice and uphold high standards of patient confidentiality.

Leadership, Management & Governance

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve service targets and improve patient pathways.
  • Participate in audit, service improvement, and clinical governance programmes.
  • Contribute to the strategic development of the Diabetes & Endocrinology service, including digital optimisation.
  • Manage resources responsibly and contribute to departmental management activities.

Teaching & Education

  • Provide high-quality teaching for undergraduate students, postgraduate trainees, and allied health professionals.
  • Supervise rotating trainees and contribute to clinical skills teaching.
  • Actively engage in departmental educational activities.

Research

  • Support ongoing clinical research and expand the department's research capability.
  • Apply research findings to clinical practice and critically evaluate published evidence.
  • Participation in clinical studies is encouraged, with opportunities to lead or collaborate.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • Entry on the Specialist Register in Diabetes & Endocrinology, or within 6 months of CCT/CESR at interview.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.

Desirable

  • MD, PhD or higher academic degree.
  • Evidence of relevant research activity.

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Broad and high-level clinical experience in Diabetes & Endocrinology.
  • Ability to independently manage the full range of acute and chronic endocrine and diabetes conditions.
  • Able to contribute to the speciality on-call rota.

Desirable

  • Experience in insulin pump/technology-driven diabetes care.
  • Experience in transgender endocrinology or bone endocrinology.

Management & Administrative Skills

Essential

  • Evidence of clinical audit, service improvement and governance engagement.
  • Ability to supervise trainees and manage clinical workload efficiently.
  • Understanding of service organisation, national targets, and resource management.

Desirable

  • Experience in service development or leading clinical pathways.

Teaching

Essential

  • Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate learners.
  • Ability to teach clinical skills and provide adequate supervision.

Desirable

  • Experience teaching lay groups and wider MDT staff.
  • A formal teaching qualification.

Research

Essential

  • Ability to critically evaluate clinical research.
  • Understanding of research principles and audit methodology.

Desirable

  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
