Gastroenterology Consultant
Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and forward-thinking Consultant Gastroenterologist to join an ambitious and innovative GI service in the South West. This dynamic department integrates gastroenterology, upper gastrointestinal surgery, colorectal surgery, emergency general surgery, and endoscopy, delivering a comprehensive digestive diseases service to both local and regional populations.
The successful applicant will join a progressive, collaborative team committed to improving patient outcomes through modernised pathways, digital innovation, and multidisciplinary working. Subspecialty interests are welcomed and encouraged, particularly where they enhance and complement the existing gastroenterology provision. The service currently has the capacity to support all gastroenterology subspecialties, offering exceptional scope for development.
This post also attracts an additional Recruitment & Retention Payment of £5,000 and a relocation package of up to £8,000 (terms and conditions apply).
Main Duties of the Role
1. Outpatient Responsibilities
You will participate in general and subspecialty outpatient clinics, held via:
- Telephone consultations
- Video clinics
- Face-to-face appointments
Outpatient sessions take place in purpose-built facilities within the region, with occasional sessions in peripheral sites as required.
2. Endoscopy Services
You will provide upper and lower GI endoscopy within a modern, well-equipped endoscopy suite. Responsibilities include:
- OGD and colonoscopy (JAG accreditation required)
- Management of therapeutic endoscopy depending on subspecialty interest
- Participation in quality improvement and service development in endoscopy
3. Acute Gastroenterology Service
You will take part in the acute gastroenterology rota on a 2 in 12 basis, which includes:
- Daily ward rounds for gastroenterology inpatients (6 days per week during rota weeks)
- Assessment of referrals from the acute medical take
- In-reach to clinical teams requiring gastroenterology input
- Management of upper GI bleeds during working hours (09:00–18:00)
4. Teaching & Training
The role includes active participation in teaching programmes for:
- Undergraduate medical students
- Foundation trainees
- Core medical trainees
- Specialist registrars
You will contribute to departmental education sessions and help shape the development of junior clinicians.
5. Leadership, Governance & Service Development
As part of the consultant team, you will:
- Participate in departmental and divisional management activities
- Support service improvement initiatives
- Engage in annual job planning, appraisal and revalidation
- Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and patient safety processes
- Play a key role in redesigning pathways to improve efficiency, access and patient experience

Person Specification
Qualifications & Training — Essential
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Experience & Clinical Skills — Essential
- Broad experience and high-level competence in general gastroenterology
- JAG-accredited OGD and colonoscopy
- Experience in managing upper GI bleeding (endoscopic and non-endoscopic)
- Competence in managing acute GI emergencies
- Ability to apply clear clinical reasoning and sound judgement
- Experience across ward, outpatient and endoscopy settings
Desirable (Depending on Subspecialty Interest)
- Hepatology
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
- ERCP (JAG accreditation)
- Therapeutic upper GI endoscopy
- Therapeutic lower GI endoscopy
- Nutrition support services
