An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced clinician to join a rapidly developing Acute Medicine service in the South West. This is a key appointment within a service undergoing significant expansion, with ambitious plans to grow its Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and to optimise urgent care pathways.

You will join an enthusiastic, collaborative multidisciplinary team committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred acute medical care. Primary Duties of the Role

Clinical Responsibilities

You will work within a busy, forward-thinking Acute Medicine service comprising:

  • A 39-bedded Acute Medical Unit
  • A dedicated Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit
  • Responsibility for managing the Medical Take
  • Close working relationships with Emergency Medicine, Care of the Elderly, Respiratory, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, and other acute specialities

Key clinical responsibilities include:

  • Leading consultant ward rounds and overseeing new admissions
  • Providing senior clinical decision-making and rapid assessments
  • Managing acute medical patients in a high-paced environment
  • Undertaking practical procedures and ensuring timely patient reviews
  • Liaising with colleagues across specialities to ensure seamless patient flow
  • Supporting and supervising ACPs, registrars, junior doctors, and nursing staff

You will also take part in the Acute Medical Take (08:00–20:00, weekdays), working collaboratively to deliver safe, efficient and high-quality acute care.

Acute Medicine Clinics

Consultant support for a clinic model run by ACPs and Registrars, offering:

  • New patient appointments
  • Follow-ups
  • Infusions and transfusions
  • Support for early discharge and reduced admission rates

Leadership & Service Development

As a senior member of the team, you will:

  • Provide clinical leadership for the multidisciplinary acute team
  • Contribute innovative ideas for pathway redesign and patient flow optimisation
  • Support the development of new models of care aligned with the regional acute medicine strategy
  • Participate in departmental governance, including audit, quality meetings and mortality reviews
  • Ensure timely completion of discharge summaries, triage of referrals, documentation, and administrative tasks

Patient Care & Governance Responsibilities

The post holder is expected to:

  • Adhere to all policies relating to safe and efficient patient care
  • Support clinical priorities such as RTT targets and admission avoidance targets
  • Participate in departmental and trust-wide governance programmes
  • Engage in clinical audit and evidence-based practice
  • Support an open learning culture and risk-aware approach to innovation

Teaching, Training & Research

You will:

  • Teach medical students, junior doctors, ACPs and multidisciplinary staff
  • Participate in the supervision and educational development of trainees
  • Support ongoing CPD, reflective practice, and teaching programmes
  • Engage in research activities where appropriate, contributing to the academic and clinical development of the service

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training — Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • Must be on the Specialist Register by the time of the appointment
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience

Desirable

  • Higher academic degree (MD/PhD)

Experience — Essential

  • Broad training in Acute Medicine
  • Ability to manage acute medical patients independently
  • Evidence of delivering acute care without direct supervision

Desirable

  • Additional specialist interests that complement departmental needs

Clinical Skills & Knowledge — Essential

  • Up-to-date knowledge across Acute Medicine
  • Awareness of NHS acute care priorities
  • Competent in acute decision-making and senior review

Governance & Audit — Essential

  • Understanding of clinical governance principles
  • Evidence of audit participation
  • Commitment to CPD and evidence-based practice

Research — Essential

  • Understanding of research methodologies
  • Evidence of research involvement or peer-reviewed publications

Teaching & Training — Essential

  • Experience teaching medical students and supervising trainees
