An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Medical Oncology Consultant to join a forward-thinking and highly collaborative Oncology service within the West Midlands. You will join a dynamic consultant body supported by an established specialist nursing workforce, with opportunities to develop tumour-site interests, contribute to high-quality research, and work closely with leading academic and clinical partners.

Preferred experience includes breast oncology and melanoma; however, final tumour-site allocation will be discussed at interview based on service needs and your subspecialty strengths.

Clinical Responsibilities

The successful applicant will demonstrate substantial experience in managing oncology patients, with particular exposure to urology, gynaecology, and head & neck cancers. Working within a proactive multidisciplinary environment, you will be supported to develop disease-site special interests and contribute to the expansion of high-quality oncology services across the region.

Research is actively encouraged, with access to world-class academic and clinical trial infrastructure to support your involvement in translational medicine and investigator-led studies.

Primary Duties of the Role

Inpatient Responsibilities

  • Participate in the attending and on-call rota, working closely with medical and nursing teams across the trust.
  • Provide senior inpatient care, including management of acute oncology presentations and specialist liaison advice.
  • Oversee a defined cohort of inpatients and ensure continuity of specialist oncology input.
  • Provide reciprocal cover for colleagues during periods of leave to maintain service consistency.

Outpatient Responsibilities

  • Deliver several specialist Oncology clinics each week, aligned with your core tumour-site allocation.
  • Contribute to the management of breast, melanoma, urology, gynaecology, and head & neck patients, depending on expertise.
  • Support clinical trial recruitment and act as Principal Investigator where appropriate.
  • Work closely with nurse specialists, AHPs, and the wider team to ensure timely and effective outpatient pathways.

Multidisciplinary & Educational Activity

  • Attend weekly MDT meetings and contribute actively to shared decision-making and treatment planning.
  • Participate in monthly quality meetings, educational sessions, journal clubs, and mortality & morbidity reviews.
  • Engage in teaching and mentorship within a strong academic training environment.

  • Broad clinical experience across Medical Oncology

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCP (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience

Essential Experience & Competencies

  • Completion of recognised Oncology training
  • Strong clinical competence in Medical Oncology
  • Understanding of current trends, developments, and innovations in Oncology
  • Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement
  • Experience in postgraduate teaching and supervision
  • Ability to develop and enhance Oncology services
  • Knowledge of national oncology pathways and NHS service frameworks
  • Excellent teamworking skills across clinical and non-clinical teams

Desirable

  • Higher degree (MD/PhD)
  • Experience within a major academic cancer centre
  • Experience as PI or sub-investigator in clinical trials
  • Evidence of publications or presentations
