We are inviting applications for an enthusiastic and dedicated Consultant Geriatrician to join a forward-thinking and supportive team within the South East Region. This is an exciting opportunity for a consultant who is passionate about delivering high-quality, compassionate care to older adults and wishes to contribute to the ongoing development of comprehensive services for frailty and geriatrics.

The postholder will play a central role in delivering inpatient and outpatient services, leading multidisciplinary care, and supporting innovation across the care of older people. Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care for elderly and frail patients.
  • Lead and participate in the delivery of General Internal Medicine (GIM), including acute inpatient work and regular outpatient clinics.
  • Contribute to the development and expansion of the regional Frailty Service, supporting both acute and community-based initiatives.
  • Participate in the 1:11 general medical on-call rota, providing advice and clinical input when required.
  • Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, ensuring high standards of education, training, and clinical practice.
  • Participate in departmental audits, quality improvement projects, and service development initiatives.
  • Engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, contributing to the training of medical students, junior doctors, and nursing staff.
  • Work collaboratively with operational and clinical leaders to improve service delivery and patient outcomes.

About the Service

The Geriatric Medicine Department within the South East Region offers a comprehensive range of acute and community-based services for older patients, including comprehensive geriatric assessments, stroke rehabilitation, and support for frailty. The service is committed to continuous improvement and innovation, with close links to neighbouring tertiary centres and primary care teams.

Consultants are encouraged to develop special interests in areas such as frailty, dementia, stroke rehabilitation, perioperative medicine, or community geriatrics, depending on experience and interest.

The service strongly promotes professional development, providing flexibility in job planning and opportunities for involvement in service redesign, research, and education.

Teaching, Research, and Professional Development

  • Contribute to teaching and supervision of medical students, postgraduate trainees, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in clinical audits, service evaluations, and research activities relevant to the speciality.
  • Opportunities exist to engage with local and regional training programmes and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
  • The department supports ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and offers study leave in line with NHS consultant terms and conditions.

Clinical Governance and Leadership

  • Actively participate in clinical governance, morbidity and mortality meetings, and departmental quality assurance processes.
  • Support the development of best practice pathways for elderly care, frailty, and rehabilitation.
  • Collaborate with clinical and managerial colleagues to enhance patient care and operational efficiency throughout the department.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion within the healthcare setting.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP or equivalent).
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine (via CCT, CESR, or European Community Rights).
  • Minimum of 1 year of NHS experience.

Desirable:

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc, or equivalent).
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education, leadership, or management.

Experience & Skills

Essential:

  • Completion of recognised training in General Internal Medicine with significant experience in Geriatric Medicine.
  • Evidence of excellent clinical skills and sound judgment in managing complex elderly patients.
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in Geriatric Medicine and Frailty Care.
  • IT literacy and familiarity with electronic health systems.

Desirable:

  • Published clinical audit or research.
  • Proven record in service development or quality improvement.

Teaching and Research

Essential:

  • Demonstrated experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and governance activities.

Motivation and Leadership

Essential:

  • Commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care.
  • Strong organisational and leadership skills.
  • Enthusiasm for service development and innovation.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable:

  • Formal management or leadership training.
  • Experience in leading change or service improvement initiatives.
