Rheumatology Consultant
Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and forward-thinking Consultant in Rheumatology to join a friendly and well-established team in the South East region. This appointment follows the retirement of a long-standing Consultant and offers an excellent opportunity for a new colleague further to develop a comprehensive Rheumatology service for the local population.
The service provides a full range of Rheumatology and DEXA pathways, and the successful candidate will be encouraged and supported to develop subspecialty interests, contribute to postgraduate and undergraduate teaching, and participate in service development. Opportunities also exist to pursue external clinical links or research activity as appropriate.
Primary Duties of the Job
The Consultant will contribute to delivering high-quality Rheumatology care and supporting the continued growth of the service. Key responsibilities include:
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide outpatient and inpatient Rheumatology services for the local population.
- Deliver high-standard clinical assessment, diagnosis, and management of a wide range of Rheumatological conditions.
- Support and grow existing DEXA and osteoporosis services.
- Work collaboratively with nursing, therapy, and administrative colleagues to ensure smooth patient pathways.
Teaching & Training
- Participate in the education of trainees within the regional training programme.
- Support undergraduate medical students undertaking clinical placements.
- Contribute to departmental teaching and CPD activities.
Leadership, Management & Service Development
- Engage in service planning and clinical governance activities.
- Contribute to audits, research, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Support the expansion of Rheumatology services and development of specialist interests aligned with local needs.
Job Plan
The indicative job plan (10 PAs) includes:
- 1.5 SPA core activities
- Up to 1 additional SPA for agreed roles, for a total of 11 PAs
- SPA allocation reviewed at 6 months and annually thereafter
- Option for flexible/off-site SPA work with agreement
The job plan will be reviewed at 3 months and then yearly with the Clinical Director.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
- CCT in Rheumatology (or within 6 months of interview), or CESR
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Clinical Experience
Essential:
- Completion of recognised Rheumatology training
- High level of clinical expertise in Rheumatology
- Up-to-date knowledge of current trends and developments in the speciality
- Competent IT skills
Audit & Research
Essential:
- Evidence of participation in audit and quality improvement relevant to Rheumatology
Teaching
Essential:
- Experience in postgraduate clinical teaching
Management & Leadership
Essential:
- Understanding of current NHS structures and service priorities
- Ability to contribute to service development
