An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine to join a progressive NHS team in the North West region.

The successful candidate will take the lead in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) within the Emergency Department, providing high-quality care to children and young people attending with a wide range of conditions. This role also includes acting as the lead doctor for child protection within the department, ensuring the highest standards of safeguarding and paediatric care.

Primary Duties of the Job

As a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, you will:

  • Provide clinical leadership for the Paediatric Emergency Medicine service.
  • Ensure rapid assessment, treatment, and high-quality clinical decision-making for all patients, maintaining safety and efficiency at all times.
  • Oversee PEM teaching and training for all doctors and nursing staff within the department.
  • Coordinate paediatric resuscitation courses and simulation-based training.
  • Serve as the lead doctor for child protection, working closely with safeguarding teams to ensure the safety and well-being of children.
  • Collaborate with paediatric medical, surgical, orthopaedic, and critical care teams within the hospital and across associated hospital networks.
  • Work closely with the Nurse Coordinator to ensure effective team communication, timely interventions, and optimal patient flow.
  • Provide high-quality supervision and mentorship to junior medical staff, promoting a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
  • Support and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, including the supervision of trainees, delivery of tutorials, and assessment of clinical competencies.
  • Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out by the General Medical Council (GMC) and adhere to the principles of “Good Medical Practice.”
  • Participate in audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives within the Emergency Department.
  • Uphold departmental standards for clinical governance, patient safety, and service development.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Reception, resuscitation, diagnosis, and initial management of all paediatric emergencies as appropriate.
  • Provide clinical expertise in the management of acutely ill or injured children.
  • Support advanced life support and trauma management as required.
  • Ensure effective multidisciplinary team working to deliver safe, high-quality care.
  • Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge and competence through continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Provide cross-cover for clinical duties when colleagues are absent to ensure service continuity.
  • Participate in the departmental on-call rota as required.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:
  • Primary medical qualification (e.g., MBBS or equivalent).
  • Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
  • FCEM, FRCA, FRCS, MRCP, or equivalent qualification.
  • PEM sub-specialist qualification through RCEM or RCPCH.
  • Valid certification in ALS, APLS/EPALS, and ATLS (ETC).
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable:
  • Higher qualification (MD, PhD, or equivalent).
  • Membership of relevant professional societies, such as RCEM.

Experience

Essential:
  • Demonstrated experience and competence in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
  • Experience in managing acute paediatric presentations and trauma.
  • Evidence of participation in audit, research, and clinical governance.
  • Experience in supervising and teaching junior doctors and nurses.

Desirable:

  • Experience in service development or quality improvement initiatives.
  • Previous leadership roles within an Emergency or Paediatric department.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork abilities.
  • Competence in prioritising workload and managing clinical risk.
  • Commitment to training, education, and mentoring.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing demands.

Desirable:

  • Experience in management or leadership training.
  • Understanding of NHS service structures, targets, and governance frameworks.
