An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and dedicated Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a dynamic and forward-thinking Acute Medicine team in the North West Region.
The successful candidate will join a well-established department within the Division of Integrated Medicine and Emergency Care, supporting a large multidisciplinary workforce comprising Consultants, Registrars, Junior Doctors, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, and Physician Associates. The unit also provides training for medical students and junior doctors, offering a stimulating and fast-paced clinical environment.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality clinical care to patients in the Acute Medicine service, including oversight of daily ward rounds, reviews, and admissions.
- Lead and coordinate the rapid triage, assessment, and management of acutely unwell medical patients.
- Ensure efficient patient flow by facilitating early discharges and safe transitions of care.
- Deliver high-quality clinical leadership and supervision for junior doctors, ACPs, and Physician Associates.
- Support Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and ambulatory services, ensuring rapid and safe discharge where appropriate.
- Participate in medical take, ensuring the timely review and management of admissions.
- Collaborate with colleagues across specialities to optimise patient care and meet both local and national performance standards.
- Take part in audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance programmes.
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, offering mentorship and supervision to junior colleagues.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive medical documentation in line with Trust and GMC requirements.
- Uphold all local and national policies, including infection prevention and control, safeguarding, and data protection.
- Engage in continuing professional development and revalidation, participating in appraisal and reflective practice.
Associated Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical and Administrative
- Deliver services in line with the agreed Job Plan and participate in annual reviews.
- Undertake administrative duties associated with patient care, audit, and teaching responsibilities.
- Liaise effectively with primary and secondary care colleagues to ensure seamless patient care pathways.
Education and Training
- Actively contribute to teaching and training programmes for undergraduates, foundation doctors, and speciality trainees.
- Support the department’s commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and Continuing Medical Education (CME).
Research and Audit
- Participate in clinical audits and service improvement projects.
- Encourage innovation and the adoption of evidence-based practice.
Management and Leadership
- Support the service in achieving key performance indicators related to Acute Medicine.
- Contribute to departmental planning, governance, and resource management.
- Participate in the development and implementation of policies, protocols, and service improvements.
Clinical Governance and Quality
- Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge and skills relevant to the speciality.
- Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, and peer learning sessions.
- Support the development of a culture of continuous quality improvement.
Person Specification
Legal Requirements
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Inclusion on the Specialist Register or eligibility within 6 months of the interview date
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience required
Qualifications
- MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
- MRCP or equivalent
- Higher degree (MD/PhD) is desirable
Experience
- Broad experience in Acute and General Internal Medicine
- Demonstrated ability to manage acutely unwell patients across a range of medical presentations
- Experience supervising and teaching junior medical staff
- Evidence of involvement in audit, service development, or quality improvement
- Prior leadership or management experience is desirable
