An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Consultant Anaesthetist to join a high-performing NHS department in the East Midlands Region.

This is a substantive 10 PA post, typically including 8.5 PA of direct clinical care and 1.5 PA for supporting professional activities (SPA). Additional SPA time may be agreed for candidates taking on extra roles within the organisation.

The Role

As a Consultant Anaesthetist, you will contribute to the safe, effective, and efficient delivery of anaesthetic services across both elective and emergency settings. You will join a supportive and collaborative department that works across a range of surgical specialities, including general, gynaecological, orthopaedic, and high-dependency care.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing high-quality anaesthetic care for elective and emergency procedures
  • Participating in the consultant on-call rota
  • Supporting and supervising junior medical staff
  • Contributing to teaching, audit, and clinical governance
  • Participating in service development and quality improvement initiatives

Candidates are expected to reside within a reasonable distance of the hospital to ensure timely attendance within 30 minutes when on call.

Training, Teaching and Research

The successful candidate will be encouraged to take part in:

  • Teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students
  • Audit and quality improvement projects
  • Research activity and clinical governance initiatives
  • Educational and professional development programmes

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on (or within 6 months of) the GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthesia
  • FRCA (or equivalent qualification)
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
  • Recent and relevant experience in a broad range of anaesthetic subspecialties
  • ALS and EPLS (or equivalent) certification
  • Strong teamworking, communication, and leadership skills

Desirable:

  • Subspecialty interest (e.g. anaesthesia for high BMI patients or obstetric anaesthesia)
  • Experience in clinical governance or service improvement
  • Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education or Management
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
