An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join a growing and dynamic respiratory team in the South East region. This post offers the chance to be part of an expanding service committed to improving respiratory care delivery through innovation, collaboration, and patient-centred practice.

The department is currently expanding its consultant body to meet increasing service demand and support new models of care focused on reducing inpatient stays, enhancing community respiratory services, and developing advanced outpatient pathways.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality inpatient and outpatient respiratory care.
  • Manage patients across two dedicated respiratory wards, co-leading daily ward rounds and multidisciplinary handovers.
  • Develop sub-speciality interests in areas such as asthma biologics, interstitial lung disease, EBUS, or pleural interventions, aligned with departmental priorities.
  • Participate in and expand the department’s pleural and EBUS clinics and contribute to the daily respiratory hot clinic.
  • Provide expert input to community-based services through multidisciplinary team discussions and advice & guidance systems.
  • Engage in clinical governance, quality improvement, and service development initiatives.
  • Contribute to medical education and supervision of junior doctors, medical students, and allied health professionals.
  • Support the clinical leadership team in implementing departmental strategy and innovation.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience

Desirable:

  • Higher academic qualification (MD, PhD, or equivalent)
  • Formal management or teaching qualification

Experience

Essential:

  • Broad clinical experience in Respiratory Medicine
  • Competency in managing acute and chronic respiratory conditions, including pleural procedures and ventilation support
  • Proven ability to lead and work effectively in multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience in teaching, audit, and clinical governance

Desirable:

  • Experience in sub-speciality areas such as ILD, asthma biologics, EBUS, or interventional pleural work
  • Evidence of research or quality improvement activity
  • Leadership experience in service development
