Geriatric - Consultant
Apply nowAn excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and forward-thinking Consultant Geriatrician to join a progressive and multidisciplinary team in the Northern Ireland Region. This role will be central to the continued development of integrated community and inpatient services for older adults, providing both clinical leadership and hands-on care to complex and frail patients.
The successful applicant will play a key role in shaping services across community hospital wards and frailty virtual wards, ensuring patients receive expert, coordinated care closer to home.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide senior clinical oversight and specialist input across community hospitals and virtual frailty wards.
- Offer clinical advice and guidance to GPs, District Nurses, Community Matrons, Therapists, and wider MDT colleagues managing complex and frail patients in the community.
- Lead on the development and delivery of step-up and step-down care pathways, supporting smooth transitions between hospital and community settings.
- Deliver high-quality geriatric care, focusing on proactive management, rehabilitation, and patient-centred decision-making.
- Act as a clinical leader, driving innovation, service transformation, and continuous improvement within geriatric medicine.
- Contribute to teaching and supervision of junior medical staff, trainees, and allied health professionals.
- Participate in governance activities, including audit, clinical effectiveness, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain professional development and comply with appraisal, revalidation, and continuing medical education requirements.
Department Overview
The department delivers comprehensive geriatric services through a network of community hospitals and outreach teams. Care is delivered via a multidisciplinary approach involving doctors, nurse consultants, advanced clinical practitioners, therapists, and specialist nurses.
This model supports complex patients both in inpatient settings and in their own homes, ensuring holistic and person-centred care. The department is dynamic and evolving, offering the opportunity to lead transformation projects that strengthen community-based healthcare.
Requirements
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- CCT (or within 6 months of completion) in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine
- Proven clinical experience in managing frail and elderly patients across community and inpatient settings
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams
- Commitment to quality improvement, governance, and evidence-based care
Desirable
- Experience in service development or transformation within community or geriatric settings
- Evidence of teaching or mentoring at the undergraduate or postgraduate level
- Management experience or formal leadership training
- Publications, audit projects, or research in geriatric or community medicine
