About the Department
The Gastroenterology Department provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, including inpatient care, outpatient clinics, and a full endoscopy service. The team currently consists of eight consultant gastroenterologists, supported by resident doctors, specialist registrars, a clinical fellow, and specialist nurses.
The department benefits from a dedicated 30-bed gastroenterology ward, advanced endoscopy facilities, and strong multidisciplinary collaboration. There is a clear commitment to training, research, and clinical quality improvement, with consultants encouraged to develop areas of sub-specialist interest.
About the Role
The successful applicant will join a team of experienced gastroenterologists providing inpatient, outpatient, and endoscopic care across the region. The role offers opportunities to lead on specialist interests while contributing to the ongoing expansion and development of gastroenterology services.
Consultants typically rotate onto the gastroenterology ward for 10–12 weeks per year, providing inpatient care alongside outpatient clinics and endoscopy sessions. The post also includes participation in the emergency endoscopy rota, supported by an on-call nurse and a resident medical team.
The standard job plan includes 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) encompassing ward rounds, clinics, endoscopy, and Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) time, with flexibility available to suit individual interests or service needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist gastroenterology care for both inpatients and outpatients, ensuring high standards of clinical practice and patient safety.
- Participate in the emergency endoscopy rota, delivering urgent endoscopic procedures as required.
- Undertake diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy sessions, contributing to service efficiency and clinical outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to plan and deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.
- Contribute to service development, quality improvement, and innovation within gastroenterology and endoscopy services.
- Supervise and teach junior doctors, speciality trainees, and medical students, supporting education and training activities within the department.
- Participate in audit, clinical governance, and research activities to support continual improvement.
- Engage with multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective coordination of care and appropriate service delivery.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of departmental and trust-wide policies and guidelines.
Professional Development and Education
- Participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and maintain registration with the Royal College of Physicians.
- Engage in teaching, mentoring, and supervision of medical students, foundation doctors, and specialist trainees.
- Take an active role in audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to service redesign and innovation to enhance patient experience and outcomes.
- Opportunities are available for leadership development, educational roles, and involvement in clinical research.
Essential Requirements
- Complete registration and licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- Relevant medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent).
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Gastroenterology, or within six months of achieving CCT.
- Demonstrable experience and expertise in clinical gastroenterology, including endoscopy.
- Proven ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and leadership skills.
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit and quality improvement projects.
- Commitment to ongoing education, teaching, and professional development.
Desirable Attributes
- Higher academic qualification (MD, PhD, or equivalent).
- Experience in curriculum development, medical education, or training supervision.
- Experience in research or publications in recognised medical journals.
- Understanding of service transformation and organisational change.
- Subspecialty interest (e.g., hepatology, IBD, advanced endoscopy) that complements existing departmental expertise.
