Consultant Histopathology
Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Histopathologist to join a highly collaborative and motivated pathology team within the Yorkshire and Humber region. This position forms part of the Scarborough Hull York Pathology Service (SHYPS) — a clinically led, cross-regional network providing a wide range of diagnostic services across multiple acute and community sites.
The department is known for its diverse and complex case mix, offering an excellent environment for both new consultants and experienced specialists seeking to expand their expertise. The team provides a supportive and innovative setting where every member contributes to delivering accurate and timely diagnostic services for the region.
The department is actively involved in postgraduate training and education, supporting both medical and dental trainees across Yorkshire. The service is also working in partnership with the National Pathology Imaging Co-operative (NPIC) to implement digital pathology, enhancing flexibility and remote working options for consultants.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality Histopathology and cytology reporting across a broad range of specimen types.
- Offer expert clinical opinions in specialised areas such as gynaecology, dermatopathology, gastrointestinal, urology, and head & neck pathology.
- Engage in multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions to support integrated patient care.
- Contribute to departmental teaching and supervision of both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
- Participate in clinical governance, quality improvement, and audit activities.
- Maintain professional development and uphold the GMC’s “Duties of a Doctor” standards at all times.
- Support the implementation of digital pathology and innovative reporting practices.
Job Plan and Working Arrangements
- Contract type: Substantive, full-time (up to 12 PAs available).
- Job plan: Flexible arrangements including opportunities for remote reporting and home working.
- On-call: None – this post carries no out-of-hours commitment.
- Location: Based within the Yorkshire and Humber regional pathology network.
- Professional development: Active encouragement and support for participation in teaching, audit, research, and leadership activities.
Essential Criteria
- Complete GMC registration and licence to practise.
- FRCPath or equivalent qualification.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Histopathology via CCT, CESR, or within 6 months of anticipated completion at the time of interview.
- Minimum of 6 months UK experience at Consultant level in Histopathology.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and deliver expert diagnostic opinions.
- Proven competence in reporting a wide range of histological and cytological specimens.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to present findings effectively to clinical colleagues.
Desirable Criteria
- Postgraduate thesis or higher academic qualification (MD or equivalent).
- Substantive NHS experience in a similar role.
- Experience in supervising Specialist Registrars (StRs) or medical students.
- Demonstrable involvement in clinical research, audit, or quality improvement initiatives.
