Apply nowAn exciting opportunity is available for an experienced and motivated Consultant in General Medicine to join a dedicated team on the East Coast of New Zealand. This role offers the perfect balance of professional fulfilment and lifestyle, set within one of the country’s most stunning coastal regions.
In this position, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing comprehensive care to a diverse patient population. The department operates with three acute medical teams, managing an unselected medical take and offering exposure to a wide range of presentations and pathology.
Your responsibilities will include admissions, inpatient care, and multidisciplinary management, working closely with specialists in Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, and the ICU. You will also contribute to service development, participate in educational and teaching activities, and play an active role in supporting junior medical staff.
About the Service
The General Medicine department provides a broad and engaging scope of practice, supported by modern facilities and strong collegial relationships across specialities. The service is well equipped to handle both acute and elective medical cases, ensuring comprehensive, patient-centred care.
As part of a 115-bed acute care facility, the hospital offers a comprehensive range of secondary services, including surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics, orthopaedics, ICU, emergency medicine, mental health, and rehabilitation. Advanced diagnostic services, including CT and MRI, support effective clinical decision-making and timely interventions.
The team places a strong emphasis on clinical education, offering access to protected teaching sessions, journal clubs, and clinical skills training, thereby encouraging continuous professional growth.

Requirements:
- Vocational registration in General Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ), or eligibility for Provisional Vocational Registration
- Completion of approved postgraduate training in General Medicine
- Proven competence across a range of acute and chronic medical conditions
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- Commitment to culturally safe practice and improving health outcomes for all communities
