An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join a dynamic and forward-thinking department in the Greater London Region.
This is an existing post that has become available due to staffing changes within the Respiratory Department. The successful applicant will play a key role in delivering high-quality respiratory and general internal medicine services, encompassing inpatient, outpatient, and acute care settings.
The appointee will also have the opportunity to develop an ambulatory pleural service, participate in weekly Lung Cancer MDT and Chest Radiology meetings, and conduct bronchoscopy lists. Dedicated time will also be allocated for teaching, training, research, and quality improvement activities.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide specialist respiratory and general internal medicine services, including all aspects of patient management across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings.
- Participate in ward referrals, outpatient clinics, and the management of TB services.
- Attend and contribute to the weekly Lung Cancer MDT and Chest Radiology meetings.
- Take responsibility for a regular bronchoscopy list and develop pleural services.
- Supervise and support junior medical staff, providing clinical leadership and guidance.
- Contribute to the training and education of medical students and junior doctors.
- Engage actively in clinical audit, service development, and research initiatives.
- Participate in the department’s on-call rota as required.
- Support and comply with clinical governance, quality improvement, and infection control standards.
- Uphold professional values of compassion, respect, and safety while delivering care.
Job Plan Overview
- Approximately 8 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care (DCC).
- The remaining PAs allocated for Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs), including CPD, governance, and teaching.
- Final job plan to be agreed upon with the Clinical Director based on service needs and candidate interests.
Person Specification
Qualifications – Essential
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent.
- Inclusion on the Specialist Register for Respiratory and General Internal Medicine, or within 6 months of attaining CCT/CCST at the time of interview.
Qualifications – Desirable
- Higher degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent).
Training and Experience – Essential
- Minimum of two years’ experience in Respiratory Medicine at Specialist Registrar (SpR) level or equivalent.
- Proven clinical expertise in managing a wide range of respiratory conditions.
- Experience in managing lung cancer, sleep, and ventilation services.
- Competence in diagnostic bronchoscopy and pleural ultrasound.
Training and Experience – Desirable
- Experience in EBUS (Endobronchial Ultrasound).
- Track record of service development and innovation.
- Evidence of research or published work in relevant specialities.
Management and Leadership – Essential
- Demonstrated leadership within multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to organise and manage work efficiently.
- Understanding of clinical governance principles.
Management and Leadership – Desirable
- Completion of a recognised management training course or qualification.
- Experience in developing clinical guidelines or service models.
Audit and Research – Essential
- Strong understanding of clinical audit principles.
- Completion of audit projects with demonstrable outcomes.
Audit and Research – Desirable
- Involvement in clinical research or publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Teaching – Essential
- Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including exam preparation.
