Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Consultant Gastroenterologist to join a high-performing and collaborative team of eight consultants providing comprehensive Gastroenterology and Hepatology services across the South East region.
This is a 12-month fixed-term position covering maternity leave (10.6 PAs, including participation in the GI bleed rota). The department is well-established, forward-thinking, and committed to innovation, multidisciplinary teamwork, and delivering high-quality patient care across both inpatient and outpatient settings.
The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop a subspecialty interest that complements the current team's expertise. The service provides a wide range of specialist Gastroenterology and Hepatology care, advanced endoscopy, and nutritional medicine, with access to a modern, JAG-accredited endoscopy suite and strong links to regional tertiary centres.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide Consultant-level input into the assessment and management of inpatients and outpatients with gastrointestinal and general medical conditions.
- Participate in the GI bleed rota, providing expert management of acute upper GI haemorrhage.
- Deliver high-quality endoscopy services to JAG-approved standards, including diagnostic and therapeutic OGD.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including surgical specialities and oncology services, to deliver seamless patient care.
- Provide clinical leadership and contribute to the ongoing development of gastroenterology and hepatology pathways.
- Supervise and train junior doctors and allied health professionals, fostering an environment of continuous learning.
- Participate in departmental clinical audits, governance, and service improvement initiatives.
- Attend and contribute to relevant multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
- Support education, training, and research activities within the department.
- Contribute to the efficient use of resources and support the delivery of modern, patient-centred healthcare.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Complete GMC registration and licence to practise.
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
- Dual accreditation in General Internal Medicine (GIM) and Gastroenterology.
- Speciality exam in Gastroenterology.
Experience
Essential
- Demonstrated excellence in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including independent OGD sign-off and acute GI bleed management.
- Broad experience in General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
- Participation in formal GI bleed rotas.
- Experience in multidisciplinary and cross-speciality work.
Desirable
- Subspecialty interest in Nutrition, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Hepatology, Functional GI Disorders, or Capsule Endoscopy.
- Experience in teaching, research, or service development.
