An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Haematologist to join a well-established Haematology team in the South East region. This role offers the chance to contribute to the growth and development of an integrated Haematology service, delivering patient-focused care while driving innovation in treatment and research.

The post would suit either a recently qualified candidate seeking their first consultant appointment or an established consultant looking for a new professional opportunity. The service provides extensive haematology-oncology practice to level 2b care, alongside general haematology, including obstetrics and paediatrics, transfusion medicine, and a UKHCDO-accredited Haemophilia Centre.

This is a full-time or part-time post, with flexible working arrangements considered. The appointee will play a key role in delivering high-quality inpatient and outpatient care, participating in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and supporting the wider clinical and laboratory services.

Primary Duties of the Role

  • Lead three general Haematology clinics per week for both new and follow-up patients.
  • Provide inpatient care for haematology patients up to and including BCSH level 2B.
  • Review inpatient admissions and provide support to the Haematology Day Case Unit.
  • Perform laboratory responsibilities as outlined in the job plan.
  • Participate in weekly Haematology MDTs, departmental meetings, and clinical governance activities.
  • Perform and report bone marrow aspirates and biopsies, blood films, and administer intrathecal chemotherapy safely and effectively.
  • Provide consultative advice to colleagues in both secondary and primary care settings.
  • Support the training, supervision, and teaching of junior medical staff and clinical fellows.
  • Actively engage in audit, guideline production, and clinical governance processes.
  • Contribute to clinical trials and research activity, with access to an established trials portfolio across both malignant and non-malignant Haematology.
  • Maintain professional development, attend annual appraisal and revalidation, and contribute to departmental leadership.

Job Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality inpatient and outpatient care to Haematology patients.
  • Participate in and contribute to departmental audits, clinical governance, and national audits.
  • Attend MDTs and ensure effective communication across multi-professional teams.
  • Participate in teaching activities, including journal clubs, departmental sessions, and medical student education.
  • Provide timely completion of administrative and patient-related documentation.
  • Participate in the safe administration of intrathecal chemotherapy and train junior colleagues.
  • Engage in research and innovation within Haematology, supported by an active Research Support team.
  • Champion the goals of the Haematology service and act as a leader within the department.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential:

  • Basic Medical Degree.
  • Postgraduate qualification or appropriate specialist qualification.
  • Complete GMC Registration with a licence to practise.
  • CCT in Haematology (or equivalent), or within 6 months of award of CCT at the time of interview.

Desirable:

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent).

Clinical Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Broad Haematology experience including haemato-oncology, general haematology, haemostasis and thrombosis, transfusion medicine, and laboratory expertise.
  • Proficiency in bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, as well as interpretation of samples.
  • Experience in safe administration of intrathecal chemotherapy.
  • Evidence of managing clinical risk effectively.

Desirable:

  • Emerging specialist interest in a relevant sub-field.

Knowledge

Desirable:

  • Breadth of experience both within and outside Haematology.

Organisation & Planning

Essential:

  • Proven ability to work effectively within multi-professional teams.
  • Understanding of NHS systems, clinical governance, and resource constraints.

Desirable:

  • Evidence of managerial skills and leadership achievements.

  • Commitment to teaching and training medical staff and students.
