This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Gastroenterology / Hepatology to join a well-established and forward-thinking team based in the East Midlands. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality specialist care to patients and in developing and enhancing the Gastroenterology and Hepatology services in line with national priorities and clinical best practices.
You will be actively involved in strategic initiatives, including Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) and the Cost Improvement Programme (CIP), as well as leading and implementing innovative, evidence-based service developments.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide specialist care to patients with Gastroenterological and Hepatological conditions, including inpatients, outpatients, day unit treatments, and endoscopy procedures.
- Contribute to the delivery of high-quality endoscopy services, including ERCP lists, in line with national and local waiting time targets.
- Participate in the 1:8 non-resident GI Bleed on-call rota (24-hour cover).
- Participate in the General Medical on-call rota (currently 1 in 18), acting as first on-call overnight and second on-call during weekend mornings.
- Maintain the highest standards in the clinical management of Gastroenterology patients.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues to manage day-to-day operations and deliver effective multidisciplinary care.
Organisational & Strategic Responsibilities
- Teach and supervise junior doctors, medical students, and allied health professionals.
- Act as Clinical and/or Educational Supervisor for trainees and locally employed doctors.
- Provide leadership and contribute to clinical governance, audit, and the continuous improvement of clinical pathways.
- Contribute to the development and review of clinical guidelines, care bundles, and protocols.
- Ensure active participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and personal development planning.
- Promote a safe, inclusive, and high-performing work environment by equality, health and safety, and trust-wide policies.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
- NHS Experience
Desirable:
- MD/PhD or additional research experience.
Registration
Essential:
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
Experience & Skills
Essential:
- JAG-accredited in upper and lower GI endoscopy.
- High-quality diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and colonoscopy skills.
- Proven clinical experience and expertise in general and acute medicine, including the management of medical takes.
Desirable:
- Experience in leading service developments or quality improvement projects.
- Prior involvement in teaching or clinical supervision.
