An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a dynamic and expanding multi-professional team in the South West region. The successful applicant will play a key role in enhancing and shaping the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred acute medical care.

This is a unique opportunity to influence service development across the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and short-stay inpatient wards. The role provides the scope to contribute to clinical leadership, teaching, audit, service improvement, and personal development. As part of this role, the trust is offering a retention bonus of £20,000, paid across three years.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Provide senior clinical input across the 28-bed Acute Medical Unit, the 16-bed General Medicine Ward, and SDEC.
  • Lead acute medical ward rounds and oversee assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients referred to Acute Medicine.
  • Contribute to the Acute Medical Take, working closely with the Emergency Department and other medical specialities.
  • Participate in daily board rounds and provide timely and effective care coordination and discharge planning.
  • Conduct outpatient clinics or admission avoidance clinics where appropriate and agreed during job planning.
  • Work collaboratively to support the rapid development of pathways aimed at reducing unnecessary hospital admissions.

On-Call Commitment

  • Participate in the General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call rota (currently 1:11). This includes on-site cover from 17:00–19:00 and non-resident overnight cover until 08:00.

Governance, Audit and Service Development

  • Actively participate in clinical audit, quality improvement projects, incident reporting, and service development.
  • Contribute to departmental clinical governance and risk management activities.
  • Engage in national and local initiatives to improve acute medical care and patient outcomes.

Teaching and Education

  • Contribute to the education and supervision of undergraduate medical students, foundation doctors, and internal medicine trainees.
  • Support multidisciplinary education and participate in simulation and case-based learning.
  • Encourage an environment of continuous professional development.

Research and Innovation

  • Participation in clinical research is encouraged, and support will be provided through established partnerships with local academic institutions.
  • Supervise and mentor trainees with research interests and contribute to the Trust’s research portfolio.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • CCT in Acute or General Internal Medicine or within 6 months of expected award at time of interview

Desirable:

  • Additional qualifications in teaching, research, or leadership (e.g., PGCert, MSc, PhD)
  • CESR applicants with relevant UK experience will also be considered

Clinical Experience

Essential:

  • Significant experience managing acute medical patients
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Skilled in managing patients in SDEC and acute admission settings

Desirable:

  • Experience in delivering outpatient clinics in a medical subspecialty

Teaching, Leadership & Management

Essential:

  • Experience in supervising medical trainees
  • Commitment to teaching and education of junior staff and allied professionals
  • Ability to lead and support service development

Desirable:

  • Formal teaching or educational qualification
  • Evidence of previous service innovation

Audit and Clinical Governance

Essential:

  • Understanding of clinical governance and evidence of participation in audit and quality improvement activities
  • Commitment to evidence-based practice and clinical effectiveness

Research

Essential:

  • Awareness of research principles
  • Willingness to contribute to or lead clinical research initiatives

Desirable:

  • Published peer-reviewed research
  • Knowledge of NHS R&D governance frameworks
