Pediatric Radiology - Consultant

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Consultant Paediatric Radiologist to join a growing multidisciplinary imaging team in the East Midlands. These posts have been created in response to increasing local and regional demand and to support the newly introduced 24-hour imaging service for a major children’s hospital and trauma centre.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with six consultant colleagues, delivering comprehensive paediatric imaging services across the region, including support to external partner hospitals and second opinion reporting on safeguarding cases from across the UK.
Substantive and fixed-term/locum options will be considered for suitable applicants.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
- Deliver a comprehensive elective and emergency paediatric imaging service, including on-call responsibilities shared on a 1:8 rota.
- Perform and report across a range of imaging modalities, including:
- Plain Film
- MRI
- CT
- Nuclear Medicine
- Paediatric ultrasound and fluoroscopy
- Provide reciprocal cover during colleague absences.
- Participate in and contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
- Maintain a high standard of clinical care for patients under your responsibility.
- Support efforts to improve reporting turnaround times, contributing to urgent care and cancer pathway targets.
Regional Service Contribution
- Provide specialist radiology support to a network of hospitals within the East Midlands.
- Offer a second opinion imaging review in cases of suspected non-accidental injury (NAI) as part of regional safeguarding services.
- Collaborate with network partners to ensure consistency and high standards of paediatric imaging.
Teaching and Education
- Contribute to the teaching of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees, including radiology speciality trainees, on the East Midlands North Radiology Training Scheme.
- Provide formal lectures, case-based discussions, and clinical supervision.
- Encourage and support trainee participation in audit, research and educational development.
Research
- Engage in audit, quality improvement projects, and service development.
- Collaborate with academic colleagues and contribute to paediatric imaging research initiatives aligned with the Trust and University strategy.
- Adhere to the National Framework for Research Governance and Trust R&I policies for any active research involvement.
Governance and Quality
- Participate in clinical governance activities including incident reporting, complaints review, risk management, and departmental peer review.
- Attend mandatory training and discrepancy meetings.
- Support continuous professional development (CPD) and the maintenance of skills across the team.
Service Development
- Contribute to the ongoing development of the regional paediatric imaging service.
- Implement evidence-based practice and national guidelines promptly.
- Participate in departmental planning and innovation to meet future clinical demands.
Additional Roles
- External appointments (e.g. Royal College Representative, TPD) must be discussed and agreed with the Clinical Director and reflected in the job plan where appropriate.
Person Specification
Clinical Skills and Experience
Essential:
- Completed sub-speciality training in Paediatric Radiology
- Evidenced technical skills as required for the role
- Effective and professional communication with children, families, and healthcare colleagues
Desirable:
- Paediatric interventional radiology experience
- Paediatric ENT or MSK experience
- Specific training in communication or human factors
Professional Qualifications
Essential:
- FRCR (or equivalent qualification)
- Full GMC registration
- On the GMC Specialist Register or CCT expected within 6 months of interview
Desirable:
- Higher academic or professional qualifications
Teaching, Audit and Research
Essential:
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit
- Ability to teach and support junior staff effectively
Desirable:
- Original research publications
- Teaching qualification or further training in education
Management Skills
Essential:
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team
- Able to develop and operationalise service development plans
- Appropriate delegation and leadership capability
Desirable:
- Higher management qualification or experience
