Stroke - Consultant

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine with a special interest in Stroke to join a dynamic and evolving multidisciplinary team in the South West region. This is a key leadership role within the stroke rehabilitation pathway, offering a diverse and rewarding mix of inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, alongside opportunities for innovation and service development.

Job Plan & Responsibilities

  • Act as Lead Clinician for the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit.
  • Provide cross-cover for the Neurorehabilitation Unit when needed.
  • Deliver outpatient services through clinics and domiciliary visits.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to personalised care planning.
  • Be involved in clinical governance across the stroke pathway.
  • Optionally join specialist clinics (e.g. baclofen pump, spasticity/interventional clinics).
  • Collaborate with acute care, community services, and regional partners.
  • Contribute to medical education, service development, and potential rotation models across neurorehabilitation and community services.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register in Rehabilitation Medicine or Stroke Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT)
  • MRCP(UK) or equivalent

Desirable:

  • Higher qualification in Stroke Medicine
  • Qualification in Teaching and Learning

Experience & Skills

Essential:

  • Training and extensive experience in Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Competence in general medicine and managing senior-level emergencies (if on-call is required)
  • Proven expertise in service development and quality improvement
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary clinical teams

Desirable:

  • Experience in managing limb spasticity (e.g. botulinum toxin injections)
  • Subspecialty interest in prosthetics, major trauma, or neurorehabilitation
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of NHS systems and structures
