Neurology - Consultant

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Gastroenterologist to join a forward-thinking and expanding department in the Yorkshire and the Humber region. This is a unique chance to be part of a bespoke, patient-focused team delivering high-quality care across inpatient gastroenterology units supported by strong regional partnerships.

Applicants with specialist interests, including interventional endoscopy, pan-intestinal capsule imaging, screening colonoscopy, EUS, ERCP, IBD, nutrition, and hepatology, are all encouraged to apply. An interest in General Internal Medicine (GIM) can also be accommodated, depending on the candidate’s preferences.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Provide a comprehensive consultant-led gastroenterology service to both inpatients and outpatients.
  • Undertake diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including advanced procedures such as stenting.
  • Contribute to specialist services, including IBD (with a joint medico-surgical MDT), hepatology, nutrition, and rapid access dyspepsia endoscopy.
  • Participate in MDTs for upper and lower GI cancers.
  • Maintain full clinical responsibility for the care of patients within the department, including those on outlying wards and the gastroenterologist-of-the-week rota.
  • Provide expert advice to other specialities as required.

Service Development

  • Lead or support service improvement initiatives, including the expansion of capsule endoscopy services and advanced therapeutic interventions.
  • Contribute to departmental strategy and transformation programmes.
  • Engage in clinical governance activities, including audit, quality improvement, and risk management.

Teaching and Education

  • Deliver high-quality training and supervision for junior doctors, resident colleagues, and members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in educational programmes and contribute to internal CPD and teaching sessions.
  • Support postgraduate training programmes and act as a mentor or clinical supervisor.

Research and Innovation

  • Collaborate with research bodies, including regional foundations and academic units.
  • Engage in or lead research projects, particularly those aligned with IBD, hepatology, or therapeutic endoscopy.
  • Contribute to clinical trials and portfolio studies.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Complete registration and a licence to practise with the GMC.
  • MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification.
  • MRCP or equivalent specialist qualification.

Desirable:

  • JAG accreditation for upper and lower GI endoscopy.
  • Evidence of CESR application if not on Specialist Register.
  • Higher academic qualification (MD/PhD) or postgraduate teaching qualification.

Clinical Experience

Essential:

  • Broad and high-level experience in gastroenterology.
  • Experience managing complex IBD or hepatology patients.
  • Competence in routine diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.

Desirable:

  • Experience with ERCP, Video Capsule Endoscopy (VCE), or advanced procedures like EMR/stenting.
  • Experience in managing services or developing new clinical pathways.

Teaching & Research

Essential:

  • Proven ability and enthusiasm to teach and supervise trainees and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Evidence of audit participation and application of findings into practice.
  • Trained in research methodology; commitment to evidence-based medicine.

Desirable:

  • Published research in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Formal training or qualification in medical education.

Management & Leadership

Essential:

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Time management, organisation, and commitment to service quality and improvement.
  • Understanding of NHS processes and a sense of corporate responsibility.

Desirable:

  • Previous leadership or management roles.
  • Attendance at leadership/management development programmes.

Skills & Attributes

  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Strong decision-making in high-pressure situations.
