Histopathology (Gynae) - Consultant

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Histopathologist with a special interest in Gynaecological Histology to join a dedicated, forward-thinking Cellular Pathology team in the South East of England. This role is ideal for either a new consultant or an experienced histopathologist seeking a change of pace or a relocation.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Reporting a range of general and gynaecological histopathology cases.
- Contributing to the multidisciplinary cancer team meetings.
- Collaborating with other consultants and laboratory staff to maintain a high-quality, efficient service.
- Supporting the training and supervision of junior doctors, trainees, and students.
- Participating in quality assurance activities, including established double reporting for cancer cases.
- Providing effective leadership and contributing to departmental service development.
- Fulfilling the responsibilities of Lead Histopathologist for Cervical Screening Histology (included in appraisal).
Clinical & Departmental Overview
- Approx. 29,000 surgical cases and 2,000 non-gynaecological cytology specimens are processed annually.
- Consultant workloads are managed via the Warwick workload allocation system.
- UKAS-accredited department with modern infrastructure and active involvement in regional pathology networks.
- Situated in a region offering both coastal and countryside living, with excellent access to London and major transport links.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
- Essential:
- MBBS or equivalent.
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) or equivalent.
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- CCT in Histopathology (or within 6 months of award at time of interview).
- Desirable:
- Higher qualifications (MD, PhD).
- BSE accreditation.
Experience and Training
- Essential:
- Comprehensive training and experience in general Histopathology and cytology.
- Subspecialty expertise in gynaecological Histopathology.
- Understanding of national pathology guidance and quality assurance standards.
- Desirable:
- Experience as Lead Histopathologist in Cervical Screening Histology.
Management and Leadership
- Essential:
- Knowledge of laboratory operations and staff management.
- Experience or understanding of clinical governance and appraisal.
- Demonstrated ability to lead within multidisciplinary teams.
- Desirable:
- Completion of management and Histopathology with NHS structures and service development.
Audit, Research & Publications
- Essential:
- Engagement in clinical audits and understanding of research principles.
- Desirable:
- Publications or complete histopathology projects relevant to Histopathology.
Teaching & Training

- E. Histopathology, rest, and involvement in medical education and staff training.
- Desirable:
- Formal teaching qualifications or educator accreditation.
