Stroke - Consultant
We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a consultant in stroke medicine to join a dedicated and dynamic team that provides high-quality stroke services to the local population in southeast England.
As part of the ongoing clinical strategy in the region, stroke services have been consolidated into a single site to deliver streamlined, specialist care. The Stroke Medical team is responsible for the management of all stroke patients admitted to the Acute Stroke Centre following either a Stroke or Stroke Thrombolysis Pathway.
Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) clinics are currently held across multiple sites in the area, supported by AI and telemedicine services to assist with thrombolysis on call. The pathway also benefits from two Community Stroke Rehabilitation Teams delivering Early Supported Discharge (ESD) and comprehensive rehabilitation pathways.
We are looking for an accredited physician with a background in Stroke Medicine who is passionate about service development and delivering excellent patient care. Applicants must hold complete GMC registration and either be on the Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview.
Main Duties of the Role
Emergency Care:
- Respond to thrombolysis and thrombectomy calls alongside the on-call stroke team.
- Coordinate thrombectomy referrals and patient transfers.
- Conducted inpatient reviews, including for Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) patients.
Acute Stroke Centre:
- Manage hyperacute stroke admissions and complications.
- Lead communication with multidisciplinary team members, patients, and families.
- Manage acute stroke patients, step-downs from the Acute Stroke Centre, and rehabilitation patients.
- Lead care planning discussions and best-interest meetings.
Outpatient Care:
- Run TIA clinics and complete associated administration.
- Conduct stroke clinics and inpatient follow-up reviews.
Person Specification
Qualifications:
Essential:
- MBBS or equivalent.
- Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
Desirable:
- MD or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
Training & Experience:
Essential:
- Broad experience in General (Internal) Medicine and Stroke Medicine.
Desirable:
- Additional experience in related medical specialities.
- Completion of relevant courses in Stroke Medicine or Geriatric Care.
- Ability to develop a subspecialty interest within Stroke Medicine.
Administration & Management:
Essential:
- Evidence of active participation in management and an understanding of Clinical Governance.
Desirable:
- Management course qualifications.
- Knowledge of NHS structure and recent healthcare initiatives.
Audit, Research & Publications:
Essential:
- Strong understanding of medical audit principles and research roles.
Desirable:
- Completed or published audit projects.
- Clinical research experience with publications or presentations.
Personal Skills:
Essential:
- Effective communicator and strong team player.
- Leadership qualities and professional attitude.
- IT and computer skills.
- Ability to collaborate across specialities to develop services.
- Good attendance record.
