Geriatrics - Consultant

East MidlandsGeriatricsFixed Term15 April 2025

An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a full-time Consultant in Geriatric Medicine to join a well-established team of six experienced Geriatricians. This appointment is part of a strategic expansion in response to the increasing number of frail elderly admissions in the region.

This role combines EAU-based (Emergency Assessment Unit) geriatric care with developing a robust front-end frailty service. The successful candidate will work closely with two specialist nurses and a Geriatric Fellow to design and implement patient-centred pathways that support early intervention for elderly patients at the beginning of their acute illness journey.

Key responsibilities:

  • Take a lead role in developing front-end frailty pathways to support early identification and intervention for older adults.
  • Collaborate with county-wide admission avoidance services (CECS) and integrated health and social care community teams.
  • Participate in delivering high-quality teaching for medical students (particularly Leicester undergraduates), junior doctors, and nursing staff.
  • Support departmental clinical governance, including audits, reviews, and shared learning from incidents or complaints.
  • Contribute to service planning and strategic development through participation in Department of Medicine meetings and representation on the Directorate Management Board.
  • Participate in the general medical on-call rota.
  • Engage in regular job plan reviews and support continuous improvement of the service.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
  • Full GMC registration with specialist registration in Geriatric Medicine (or within 6 months of obtaining it at the time of interview)
  • Experience in teaching undergraduates and junior medical staff
  • Experience of audit and quality improvement initiatives
  • High-level communication, organisational and leadership skills

Desirable:

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent)
  • Education/Medical Education Qualification (preferably at Master’s level)
  • Publications or presentations at the national level
  • Involvement in curriculum development or structured education delivery
  • Research in quality improvement or geriatrics

This is a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to transforming elderly care services in South Northamptonshire and the broader East Midlands region. If you are passionate about geriatric care and want to join an innovative, collaborative team, we encourage you to apply.
