An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Substantive Consultant post in Geriatric Medicine based in the North West of England. You will be part of a vibrant, multidisciplinary team delivering various services, including movement disorders, surgical liaison, frailty care, falls, stroke/TIA, and Hospital at Home initiatives.

Main Duties of the Role

The successful applicant will work within the Medicine for Older People service, which forms part of a wider Inpatient Medical Specialties unit that includes Respiratory, Haematology, Palliative Care, and General Internal Medicine.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Clinical leadership and senior oversight of Geriatric Medicine wards
  • Supervision and support of junior doctors and multidisciplinary trainees
  • Participation in a 1:8 weekend rota (8 am–4 pm), covering either inpatient wards or the Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit
  • Cross-cover for colleagues’ annual and study leave.
  • Teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees
  • Involvement in service development, clinical governance, and quality improvement activities

The service is open to applicants with specialist interests in areas such as Cardiology, Vascular Medicine, Stroke, Acute Oncology, Frailty, or Acute Medicine, offering flexibility to tailor the role to suit individual expertise.

Qualifications & Registration (Essential):

  • MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full and specialist registration (and licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligibility within six months of interview
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Geriatric Medicine or equivalent

Experience (Essential):

  • Expertise in General and Geriatric Medicine, including Frailty or Liaison services
  • Experience supervising junior medical staff
  • Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives
  • Trained Clinical Supervisor

Desirable:

  • Higher qualifications such as an MD or PhD
  • Teaching medical students or ST1 trainees
  • Supervision and assessment training (e.g. Educational Supervisor course)
  • Involvement in research and publication
  • Service development or QI project experience
