Medical Oncologist - Consultant

A University Teaching Hospital in the West Midlands seeks a Consultant Medical Oncologist to join our dedicated oncology team. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development and delivery of high-quality cancer services, working alongside a skilled multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will provide expert oncological care, lead service development, and support junior medical staff in inpatient and outpatient settings.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties:
- Provide comprehensive oncology services, including site-specialized cancer treatments.
- Offer clinical expertise in the management and development of oncology services.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) to enhance patient care and outcomes.
- Participate in the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) and contribute to out-of-hours service on a 1:9 non-resident on-call rota.
- Deliver specialist care for specific tumour sites, including Urology, Colorectal, Breast, and Acute Oncology.
- Maintain close collaboration with surgeons, physicians, and other specialities within the Trust.
- Provide supervision, guidance, and mentorship for junior medical staff and trainees.
Education, Research & Development:
- Lead and participate in teaching and training for medical students and postgraduate trainees.
- Engage in clinical audit, continuing professional development (CPD), and quality improvement initiatives.
- Actively contribute to clinical trials and research, with the support of a thriving Clinical Trials Department.
Management & Service Development:
- Collaborate in the strategic planning and improvement of oncology services.
- Work across Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) and Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), Telford as required.
- Ensure compliance with national and local NHS targets for cancer care and service delivery.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
- FRCR (Clinical Oncology) or equivalent qualification for Medical Oncology.
- Complete GMC registration & Specialist Registration in Medical Oncology (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR at the time of interview).
- Expertise in at least one of the following: Urology, Colorectal, Breast, or Acute Oncology.
- Ability to lead and take full clinical responsibility for patient care.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary cancer care teams.
Desirable Criteria:
- Previous NHS experience or comparable healthcare system experience.
- Subspecialty interest in site-specific oncology care.
- Teaching, mentoring, or leadership experience in medical education.
- Interest in clinical research and involvement in oncology trials.
