Join New Zealand’s largest network of urgent care clinics and experience an advantageous mix of clinical work, lifestyle, and professional growth.

This is an excellent opportunity for UK-based junior doctors to gain international experience in a well-supported environment that blends the best aspects of A&E minors and General Practice.

The Role

As an Urgent Care SHO, you’ll work in community-based clinics that provide walk-in care for a range of presentations – from minor injuries and illnesses to more acute cases. You’ll assess, diagnose, and treat patients in a fast-paced yet supportive clinical setting, working alongside experienced GPs, urgent care specialists, and nurses.

Your typical caseload will include:

  • Minor injuries (cuts, sprains, fractures)
  • Respiratory infections, coughs, and colds
  • Acute presentations and occasional resuscitations

This position offers an outstanding balance between professional challenge and personal well-being.

Pay and Benefits

  • Orientation rate: NZ$80 per hour
  • Core hours (7:00 am – 7:00 pm weekdays): NZ$90 per hour
  • Evenings & weekends: NZ$120 per hour
  • Average annual earnings: Approximately £90,000–£100,000, based on 30–42 hours per week
  • Relocation incentive: NZ$6,000
  • Full reimbursement for indemnity insurance and Medical Council of New Zealand registration
  • Four weeks’ annual leave + 11 paid public holidays
  • Safe, flexible rota system with opportunities for additional shifts

Support and Induction

You’ll receive a structured induction programme that includes:

  • Comprehensive orientation to New Zealand’s health system
  • Shadowing senior clinicians before independent practice
  • Supportive supervision throughout your placement
  • Consultant-led mentorship with many senior doctors experienced in the NHS

You won’t be expected to lead on patient care until you and your supervisors are confident you’re ready.

Lifestyle and Culture

Working as an Urgent Care SHO in New Zealand offers the opportunity to experience a relaxed, outdoors-driven lifestyle. With beaches, forests, and mountain trails nearby, your time outside of work can be as rewarding as your clinical experience.

You’ll join a friendly community of UK-trained doctors who’ve already made the move, ensuring a strong social and professional support network.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered, you must:

  • Have a minimum of 1 year’s NHS experience
  • Have completed Foundation Training by August 2025 or earlier
  • Have A&E experience, including time in minors or Urgent Care
  • (Bonus) Have rotations in GP, Paediatrics, or Trauma & Orthopaedics
  • Be willing to relocate for at least 12 months
  • Have graduated from a UK or Irish medical school, or have worked full-time in the NHS for at least 3 years
  • No exams required

Why Apply?

This is a unique opportunity to:

  • Gain valuable international experience
  • Work in a supported clinical setting with great work–life balance
  • Enjoy excellent earning potential and relocation support
  • Live in one of the most beautiful regions in the world
