An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Geriatric Medicine (Care of the Elderly) to join a well-established and forward-thinking consultant team in the North West. This role combines acute elderly care with opportunities to develop specialist interests, including Orthogeriatrics, Falls, Stroke/TIA, or other relevant subspecialties.

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality, consultant-led care for older adults, contributing to service development, education, and clinical governance while supporting multidisciplinary working across inpatient and outpatient settings.
 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-led inpatient care for older adults, including emergency admissions, ward rounds, and multidisciplinary team (MDT) board rounds.
  • Deliver care across the care of the Elderly wards, with additional specialist input such as orthogeriatric, surgical liaison, stroke, or TIA services as required.
  • Establish and deliver outpatient clinics aligned to the post holder’s specialist interest.
  • Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues to develop and enhance clinical pathways, protocols, and models of care within Elderly Medicine.
  • Contribute to the efficient use of inpatient beds and patient flow by working closely with diagnostic and clinical support services.
  • Provide clinical leadership, promoting effective communication within the department and across wider medical and service teams.
  • Act as Clinical and Educational Supervisor for named trainees.
  • Support the training, appraisal, and professional development of junior and middle-grade doctors.
  • Demonstrate active participation in Clinical Governance, Audit, Risk Management, and Quality Improvement initiatives.
  • Promote a compassionate, patient-centred culture and act as a role model for clinical excellence.
 

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • On the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT
  • Medical degree
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education
  • Additional tertiary qualifications

Experience

Essential

  • Completion of higher medical training
  • Experience working at the Speciality Registrar level or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
  • Recent experience in Geriatric / Elderly Medicine
  • Experience in Orthogeriatrics

Desirable

  • Overseas clinical experience
  • Broad clinical exposure within and outside the speciality

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Strong knowledge and application of evidence-based practice
  • Understanding of clinical governance and risk management
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams

Desirable

  • IT proficiency
  • Interest in medical management and service development
