An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Acute Medicine Consultant to join a well-established and expanding Acute Medicine service in the West Midlands.The successful candidate will join a consultant-led department delivering high-quality acute medical care across Medical Assessment Units, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), Acute Medical Short Stay, and Acute Frailty services. The department is undergoing significant service development through innovative urgent care pathways, providing an excellent opportunity to help shape the future of acute medical services.
Consultants are encouraged to develop specialist interests, contribute to service redesign, and play an active role in education, research and quality improvement within a supportive multidisciplinary environment.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-led care for patients admitted with acute medical conditions.
- Deliver care across the Medical Assessment Unit, Acute Medical Short Stay, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Acute Frailty services.
- Maintain overall responsibility for patients under your care.
- Work closely with Emergency Medicine, primary care and speciality teams to deliver integrated acute services.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of urgent care pathways and Same Day Emergency Care services.
- Participate in consultant out-of-hours, weekend, and late-shift rotas.
- Provide specialist advice to colleagues across medical specialities.
- Supervise, mentor and support trainee doctors.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement initiatives.
- Develop strong relationships with General Practitioners and multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless patient care.

- A consultant team comprising 19 Acute Medicine Consultants.
- Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) providing rapid assessment and management of acutely unwell medical patients.

- A well-established Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service delivering ambulatory emergency care.
- Dedicated Acute Frailty Unit supported by multidisciplinary teams.

- Strong multidisciplinary teams including Advanced Clinical Practitioners, nurses, therapists and clinical fellows.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC Registration.
- MRCP.
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register in Acute Medicine via CCT/CESR, or expected within 24 months.
- ALS (or equivalent).
Desirable
- MD or PhD.
- ATLS/ATACC (or equivalent).
Experience & Skills
Essential
- Clinical training and experience appropriate for Consultant-level Acute Medicine.
- Thorough knowledge of clinical governance, medical audit and evidence-based practice.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
- Ability to lead and supervise clinical teams.
- Experience supporting trainee doctors.
- Commitment to service development and continuous improvement.
- Strong organisational and IT skills.
Desirable
- Subspecialty clinical experience.
- Participation in service development.
- Advanced IT skills.
- Formal teaching qualification.
Teaching, Research & Leadership
