An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Haematologist to join a well-established and expanding Haematology service in North East England. The successful candidate will join a collaborative consultant team delivering comprehensive clinical and laboratory haematology services across inpatient, outpatient and day-case settings.
The post offers the opportunity to contribute to the continued development of Haematology services, multidisciplinary cancer pathways and regional clinical networks while developing a specialist clinical interest. The successful applicant will work closely with colleagues across primary care, tertiary centres and pathology services to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive Consultant-led clinical Haematology services across inpatient, outpatient and day-case settings.
• Diagnose and manage patients with both malignant and non-malignant haematological disorders.
• Deliver outpatient clinics, day-case procedures and inpatient haematology consultations.
• Perform and interpret bone marrow examinations and other specialist haematological investigations.
• Prescribe and supervise systemic anti-cancer therapies, including chemotherapy and supportive treatments where appropriate.
• Participate in regional multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings for haematological malignancies.
• Work collaboratively with laboratory, pathology, oncology, primary care and tertiary referral services to deliver integrated patient care.
• Provide clinical advice on transfusion medicine, coagulation disorders and laboratory haematology.
• Support the ongoing development of Haematology services and regional clinical networks.
• Participate in the Consultant Haematology on-call rota, including weekday and weekend cover.
• Provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues during periods of annual leave and absence.
• Supervise, mentor and support Speciality Registrars, junior doctors and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
• Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
• Contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
• Maintain continuing professional development (CPD), appraisal and GMC revalidation requirements.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

• MBBS, MBChB or equivalent recognised medical qualification.
• Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise.
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Haematology, or within six months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview.
• Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent.
• Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) or equivalent qualification.

Desirable

• MRCP Part 1 or additional relevant postgraduate qualifications.
• Additional training or qualifications supporting a specialist area within Haematology.

Experience

Essential

• Broad specialist training and extensive clinical experience in Haematology.
• Ability to independently manage patients with benign and malignant haematological disorders.
• Experience delivering inpatient, outpatient and day-case Haematology services.
• Experience managing chemotherapy and supportive treatment pathways.
• Experience participating in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
• Experience in transfusion medicine and laboratory haematology.
• Experience working collaboratively with primary care, pathology and tertiary referral centres.
• Experience supervising junior medical staff.
• Experience participating in clinical governance and audit activities.

Desirable

• A specialist interest that complements and enhances existing Haematology services.
• Experience participating in clinical research and research studies.
