An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the North & Central Islington Core Community Mental Health Team in Greater London.
This substantive 1 WTE consultant post supports the continued transformation of community mental health services in line with the NHS Long Term Plan. The successful candidate will work within a progressive, multidisciplinary team, delivering holistic, recovery-focused mental healthcare aligned with local Primary Care Networks.
The team includes statutory and voluntary sector professionals, enabling integrated support across clinical, psychological, and social care domains.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide consultant psychiatric input to the Core Community Mental Health Team.
- Undertake 8–10 assessments per week.
- Manage an active caseload of up to 40 patients.
- Provide diagnosis, formulation, treatment planning, and medication reviews.
- Complete risk assessments, crisis plans, and self-management plans.
- Provide direct patient assessments and follow-up care as required.
- Manage patients with severe and enduring mental illness, personality disorders, and complex presentations.
Primary Care Integration
- Provide specialist advice and support to local GPs and practice staff.
- Offer joint consultations, case discussions, and bespoke training.
- Strengthen pathways between primary care and secondary mental health services.
MDT / Holistic Care Model
- Work within a diverse MDT including:
- Peer Coaches
- Population Health Nurses
- Voluntary sector colleagues
- Promote trauma-informed, person-centred, recovery-focused care.
- Support patients in engaging in meaningful activities and accessing community resources.
Leadership / Governance
- Provide consultant leadership across the multidisciplinary team.
- Support service redesign and pathway development.
- Participate in governance, quality improvement, and audit programmes.
- Help develop protocols, policies, and innovative care models.
Teaching / Supervision
- Teach undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
- Support doctors-in-training through workplace-based assessments.
- Act as Educational Supervisor / Clinical Supervisor where appropriate.
- Maintain CPD and appraisal standards.
Person Specification
Requirements
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent qualification
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT
- Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent
- Section 12(2) Approval
- Approved Clinician status (or eligibility)
- Good standing with the Royal College CPD programme
- Strong knowledge of GMC Good Medical Practice
- Experience managing severe mental illness and complex risk presentations
- Expertise in evidence-based psychiatric treatment, including pharmacotherapy
- Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, the Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding
- Excellent communication and leadership skills

- Experience organising and chairing meetings
