An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Enfield North & South Core Community Mental Health Service in Greater London.

This full-time substantive consultant post sits within one of two locality-based Core Community Mental Health Teams covering the borough. The successful candidate will provide senior psychiatric leadership, support service development, and deliver high-quality care to adults with severe and enduring mental illness within a modern community model.

This is an ideal role for a consultant seeking leadership responsibility, community psychiatry practice, and involvement in pathway transformation.

Main Duties of the Job

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Manage an established caseload of patients with severe mental illness (SMI).
  • Provide psychiatric care for patients requiring medication management and ongoing review.
  • Support management of non-SMI patients alongside psychological therapies and MDT colleagues.
  • Undertake assessments of newly referred patients and formulate treatment plans.
  • Deliver evidence-based psychiatric treatment using a bio-psycho-social approach.
  • Maintain timely clinical documentation and electronic patient records.

Responsible Clinician Duties

  • Act as a Responsible Clinician (RC) for patients on Community Treatment Orders (CTO) under the Mental Health Act.
  • Ensure compliance with the Mental Health Act, the Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding processes.

Leadership / MDT Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical and professional leadership within the locality team.
  • Participate in weekly MDT meetings and operational discussions.
  • Promote collaborative, respectful multidisciplinary working.
  • Provide second opinions for consultant colleagues when required.

Governance / Quality Improvement

  • Participate in clinical governance processes.
  • Support serious incident investigations and complaint responses when required.
  • Lead or contribute to audit and quality improvement programmes.
  • Help shape service pathways and strategic priorities.

Teaching / Professional Development

  • Supervise junior doctors and other professionals.
  • Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Participate in appraisal, CPD, and mandatory training.

Person Specification

Requirements

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months
  • Approved Clinician status (or achievable within 3 months)
  • Section 12 Approval (or achievable within 3 months)
  • Excellent knowledge in Psychiatry
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Leadership and teamworking ability
  • Basic IT skills, including email and EPR systems

Desirable

  • Higher degree in education/research/management
  • Open Dialogue Training
  • Additional clinical qualifications
  • Broad specialist or subspecialist NHS experience
  • Experience in planning and delivering teaching
  • Research/service evaluation experience
  • Publications/awards/presentations
  • Experience leading audits with service improvement outcomes
  • Data gathering and management experience
