We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Consultant in Medical Oncology to join a well-established and forward-thinking Oncology Department within the South East Region. This post focuses on the management of Melanoma and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Cancers, with opportunities to contribute to other tumour sites depending on the candidate’s interest and departmental needs.

The department provides a comprehensive range of oncological services, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy, with access to advanced treatment technologies and established multidisciplinary teams. The successful candidate will join a team of Clinical and Medical Oncologists working collaboratively across multiple regional sites, ensuring seamless, high-quality cancer care for patients across the network.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to patients with Melanoma and HPB Cancers, and potentially contribute to another tumour site (e.g., Upper GI, Colorectal, Urology, or Breast) based on experience and interest.
  • Participate in specialist Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings and contribute to the development of local clinical pathways and protocols.
  • Provide systemic anticancer treatment, participate in on-call commitments (if applicable), and maintain continuity of care for patients across the cancer pathway.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of Oncology Consultants, Specialist Nurses, Pharmacists, and Allied Health Professionals to ensure safe and efficient cancer service delivery.
  • Take an active role in departmental teaching, mentoring of trainees, and involvement in audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance activities.
  • Contribute to the strategic and operational development of Oncology services within the region, including participation in service leadership and innovation initiatives.

About the Oncology Department

The Oncology Service within the South East Region is recognised for its collaborative, multidisciplinary model of care and strong commitment to innovation. The department manages a broad portfolio of tumour sites with state-of-the-art facilities, including:

  • Advanced radiotherapy and systemic therapy suites.
  • Consultant and nurse-led chemotherapy clinics.
  • Access to national and international clinical trials.
  • Specialist multidisciplinary support teams for each tumour group.

The successful applicant will join a team of experienced Consultants and Clinical Nurse Specialists providing holistic care across both early and advanced disease. There is also a strong emphasis on professional development, with active participation in national research networks and regular educational meetings across tumour groups.

Professional Development and Research

Applicants with an interest in academic or clinical research will be supported to pursue their goals. The department has a robust research portfolio, with access to national clinical trials and a track record of innovation in systemic therapy and immunotherapy delivery.

Teaching and training are integral to this role. The postholder will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education, including mentoring junior medical staff and participating in regional educational programmes.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Complete registration with the GMC and a valid licence to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Medical Oncology (via CCT, CESR, or equivalent).
  • At least one year of NHS experience.

Desirable:

  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
  • Higher degree (BSc, MD, or PhD) or evidence of academic contribution.

Experience

Essential:

  • Demonstrable expertise in the management of Melanoma and/or HPB Cancers.
  • Evidence of experience in systemic anticancer treatment delivery.
  • Competence in participating in and leading MDT discussions.
  • Proven experience in effective teamwork within complex clinical settings.

Desirable:

  • Broader experience across multiple tumour sites.
  • Experience of a clinical or research fellowship.
  • Published work in peer-reviewed journals.

Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Evidence of leadership potential and enthusiasm for service improvement.
  • Understanding of NHS Clinical Governance, patient safety, and resource management.

Teaching & Management

  • Demonstrated ability to teach and supervise junior medical staff.
  • Engagement in audit, quality improvement, and research.
  • (Desirable) Formal management training or qualification.
